Description
Two American Chairs. 1st item: American Sheraton period "fancy" side chair, painted white with black and gilt decoration, including a tablet adorned with cornucopias on the crest rail and tablets with flowers on the seat rail and front stretcher. X form back, saddle shaped rush-woven seat, and four turned legs ending in cap feet. 34"H. New England, circa 1820. 2nd item: American Federal Sheraton style armchair, possibly mulberry, with rectangular tablet back over two narrow horizontal reeded slats joined by three balls; reeded curved armrests ending in vasiform supports, over square and round turned posts ending in ring and tapered feet. Rust colored leather upholstered seat with brass tacks. 33-1/2"H x 21-3/4"W x 20"D. Possibly Southern, circa 1815. Provenance: the estate of Margaret Wemyss Connor, Nashville, Tennessee, purchased in Georgia in the 1960s.
Condition
1st item: Moderate wear to paint, loss to tip of right foot. 2nd item: Original surface but areas of both back legs stripped; chips/losses to front feet tips, repair patch to chair's left armrest, later upholstery.
