Description
Knoxville or Knox County walnut chest of drawers or bureau, almost identical to chest illustrated in "The Art and Mystery of Tennessee Furniture", p. 214, fig. 275. Consisting of a retangular top with molding underside, two drawers over three graduated drawers having scratch beading and diamond inlaid escutcheons, quarter columns with fluted reedings and turned capitals and bases, ogee base molding, resting on turned tapered feet. Yellow pine secondary. Pulls appear to be original. 45 3/4" H x 44 1/2" W x 19 3/4" D. Circa 1820-30. Note - this chest of drawers was made in the same shop as the bureau and cupboard illustrated in Plate XXVII, p. 90 of the book. Additional note - While it is suggested the similar chest in the book may have had its feet shortened, this chest has identical tapered feet to the illustrated example on p. 214, suggesting no loss of height. Provenance - Estate of Bill Selden, Athens, TN.
Condition
Refinished, drawer divider above top left drawer has had an old strip of wood added, minor build up of a few drawer supports.
