Sight - 31 3/4" H x 31 1/2" W. Framed - 36 3/4" H x 36 1/2" W. 20th century. Biography (courtesy Askart: The Artists' Bluebook): Caroll Thayer Berry was born and raised in Maine and initially worked as a mechanical draftsman. In 1910 he was sent to Panama to participate in construction of the Panama Canal. While there, he contracted malaria and was sent back to the U.S. to recuperate. During this time, he began taking art classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. When government officials saw his work, they were so impressed they commissioned him to paint a series of large murals of the Canal's construction for the walls of the administrative building. Berry returned to the U.S. and embarked on a career as a commercial artist. During World War I, he was one of the first seven officers attached to the American Camoflauge Corps, and just prior to World War II, the Bath Iron Works commissioned Berry to paint their construction of U.S. Navy Ships. Berry eventually settled back in Maine, where he also specialized in linocuts and woodblocks.
