Heritage NY sells Beatles’ first signed contract for $93,750

NEW YORK (AFP) – The first recording contract signed by the Beatles, which set the career course for the legendary band, was sold Saturday, Sept. 26 at a New York auction conducted by Heritage for $93,750, inclusive of 25% buyer’s premium. DALLAS – An impressive array of Continental furnishings led Heritage Auctions’ fall Fine & Decorative Arts Including Estates Auction to $1.7+ million, Sept. 12-13. Top lot honors were shared by a pair of Napoleon III marble and gilt bronze seven-light candelabra and a Lemerle Charpentier & Cie French gilt bronze figural mantel clock and thermometer, both of which sold for $25,000 – far exceeding pre-auction estimates. LOS ANGELES (AP) – When he arrived in Los Angeles more than 50 years ago, Eli Broad once said, he found himself in a city without a cultural center. So the billionaire arts patron decided to build one. On Sept. 20 that effort took a major step forward with the opening of The Broad, a shining, pop-art styled museum holding 2,000 works by arguably every important contemporary artist of the past 60 years.
