KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Twentieth century art plus a cache of 19th century historical ephemera proved a winning combination at the July 30 Case Antiques Auction, attracting more than 4,500 registered bidders from 60 countries. The day ended with a new world auction record for Tennessee artist Carroll Cloar and several new American auction records for international artists.
BEVERLY, Mass. – Kaminski Auctions will present an Asian arts auction Aug. 27 of nearly 500 lots. On offer is an impressive assortment of ceramics, jade, bronze, furniture, embroidery, watercolor and thangka paintings. In particular the sale emphasizes a wide variety of fine antique Chinese pottery and porcelain spanning the Han, Tang, Ming and Qing dynasties selected from Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Texas and California private collections.
Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
Among the top lots is a large, rare Chinese Tang (Tang dynasty, A.D. 618-906) Sancai official figure (below) that comes with a thermoluminescence analysis report from January 2000 verifying that the piece is consistent with pottery manufactured during that time period. The piece is valued at $20,000-$30,000.
Another Chinese Tang dynasty piece is a camel with a certificate of authenticity estimated at $8,000-$12,00 and a large Han dynasty pottery horse valued at $5,000-$8,000.
From the private collection of an important Newport, Rhode Island, estate comes an early 17th century gilt bronze Avalokiteshvara sitting on a high double lotus dhyanasana, with both hands representing vitarka mudra and grasping an utpala lotus stalk. The deity is dressed in a dhoti with a loose shawl over the shoulders adorned with sumptuous ornamental jewelry including earrings, beaded necklaces, bracelets, armbands and anklets. It has a serene expression accentuated with a subtle benign smile and is crowned with a figure of Buddha Amitabha in front of a neatly tied knot. It stands 13 3/4 inches high and is valued at $8,000-$12,000.
Two lots that are sure are sure to be of interest are two Chinese late 18th-19th century Qing dynasty elaborately carved chandeliers. The chandeliers are made of wood and gilt metal and are elaborately adorned with kingfisher feathers and a multi-tiered pagoda and a dragon. They have 12 lights and are trimmed with prisms and stand 50 inches high.
An 18th century Sino-Tibetan watercolor thangka painting, a Chinese embroidered dragon robe, a selection of jade including two carved two-handled jade cups from the Ming dynasty and a selection of fine huanghuali furniture round out the highlights of this sale.
