DETROIT – Choice pieces of Detroit’s musical history – direct from the former home of Berry Gordy Jr., founder of Motown records – will be sold at auction Friday, Oct. 13. Aaron’s Estates Sales of Birmingham, Mich., will offer memorabilia from the “Motown Mansion” in a public auction that will begin at 7 p.m. Eastern. Marsden Hartley painting, $169,650, Thomaston Place

An oil on canvas painting by Marsden Hartley (American, 1877-1943) of the sun breaking through clouds over a Maine harbor sold for $169,650 at a Summer Sale held Aug. 25-27 by Thomaston Place Auction Galleries in Thomaston, Maine. Also, an untitled gouache painting by Alexander Calder (French/ American, 1898-1976) fetched $64,350; a large 1925 oil on canvas by Waldo Peirce (American, 1884-1970) brought $33,000; and a 1930s Paris painting by James Taylor Hartwood made $28,080.
