A bronze sculpture of Diana by Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848-1907), 18 feet tall and originally produced as a weathervane for Madison Square Garden, sold for $506,000 at an auction held Jan. 23 during Americana Week in New York City by Keno Auctions. Also, a Kinsman Portrait of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart (1755-1829), topped out at $356,000; Frankenstein by William Hawkins rose to $41,000; and a Flambé Meiping vase with Qianlong mark hit $21,000.Continue reading

Hake’s smashes house record with $2.9M collectibles auction

Hand-painted, hand-stitched 1860 Abraham Lincoln and Hannibal Hamlin parade banner used by youthful political activists known as the ‘Wide Awakes.’ Fresh to the market after 30 years in a private collection, it sold for $143,104, the highest auction price ever achieved for a Lincoln textile.

YORK, Pa. – Hake’s Auctions, specialists in Americana and collectibles since 1967, set a new house record when their February 24-25 Premier Auction #231 cashed out at $2,888,163. Not only did the auction set a new monetary record for Hake’s, it also achieved new highs for sell-through rate (98%), bidder volume, and the number of bids placed.

Design Museum Holon explains what’s in its ‘Black Box’

HOLON, Israel – Design Museum Holon presents “Black Box,” exposing objects from the museum’s “black box” of treasures that have typically been reserved for preservation purposes and limited viewing. The exhibition brings to mind a visit to a historical cabinet of wonders, one that remained largely invisible and inaccessible to the public. Curated by Design Museum Holon staff, “Black Box” divulges pieces by local and international designers, design studios and manufacturers that have been preserved behind-the-scenes in the museum’s collection room. The exhibition runs through June 5.
