History
Swann Galleries was founded in New York in 1941 by antiquarian book dealer Benjamin Swann as an auction house specializing in rare and antiquarian books. George Lowry acquired the business and became president in 1970 upon Mr. Swann`s retirement.
At that time, a staff of four organized and conducted book auctions for a customer-base composed mainly of dealers. As the auction world opened to the general public, separate departments were established for different fields of collecting: first photographs, then autographs, and in the late 1980s-early 90s, prints and drawings and vintage posters. Swann is now a world leader in the auction market for works of art on paper.
Nicholas Lowry joined Swann in 1995 as head of the Poster department. He was named Principal Auctioneer in 1998 and Vice-President in 2000. In January 2001, he assumed the title of President and took over day-to-day management of the company, which now has a staff of 30; George Lowry stepped up to the new title of Chairman.
For over 25 years, Swann has been located on East 25th Street, just one block east of Madison Square Park, adjacent to the historic Murray Hill, Gramercy Park, and Flatiron districts, and right across town from Chelsea. The premises doubled in size in 1999 with the addition of a second gallery and salesroom.

Modern & Post-War Art
Swann Galleries' Spring offering of Modern & Post-War Art will feature a selection of works from the era's best genres include Abstract Expressionism, Hard-Edge Abstraction, and Color Field painting. Felrath Hines' ""Brown Landscape; Autumn Eve,"" oil on canvas, circa 1950, is on offer. The 1950s for Hines was largely devoted to painting landscapes, here he deemphasized the use of line and forms are amorphous leaving the viewer open to interpretation. Detroit artist, Al Loving's earliest artistic breakthrough came in a series of hard-edge abstractions, many with a support of canvas stretched over shaped stretchers. ""Septehedron L-B-4,"" acrylic on canvas, 1970, features a six-sided stretcher with the face of the canvas depicting four of the seven sides of the polyhedron with three sides suggested by overlapping line and form. Several artists in the Washington D.C. area pioneered the Color Field technique, establishing the Washington Color School. Featured in the sale is Mehring's ""Untitled, (# 1),"" magna on unprimed canvas, 1963. Here Mehring uses washes of color patterns in pointillist patterning divided into equal proportion on a square support. In this design he removes suggestion of a horizon line or asymmetry allowing the colors to interact without cues to suggest representational forms.Vintage Posters from the Gooding Collection
A chance encounter on a beautiful winter's evening in the 1990s, during a walk through a ski resort the Goodings frequented, led to a lengthy and passionate relationship with vintage posters. Lured into a gallery by the bright light, bold colors and vivid designs, they warmed up over a glass of wine, and purchased their very first poster: the genesis of their collecting focus that would continue for more than two decades. This collection was formed to reflect the individual interests of both collectors—one drawn to equestrian subjects, particularly works related to horses and dressage, and the other with a long-standing interest in art, graphic design, aviation, and the history of lithography, all of which are well represented. A shared love of travel and appreciation for notable artists of the Belle ÉpoqueBidder Reviews for Swann Auction Galleries (76)

Swann Auction Galleries are Consummate Professionals.
We have purchased Several Times from Swann. We had them remove the crappy frame, which saved us hundreds in shipping and used the savings to get a better frame. This is the kind of service, that is "Routine" with Swann. If everyone operated like Swann, our collection would be a hundred times larger. Swann is the best.
