CLEVELAND, Ohio — A group of contemporary artworks formerly displayed at the Cleveland Indians corporate offices is featured in the upcoming Contemporary Art auction at Gray’s Auctioneers on Wednesday, September 27. The sale is now live and open for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Real estate developer Dick Jacobs, along with his brother David, purchased the Cleveland Indians in 1986 for $35 million. During his ownership, the Indians went from perennial losers to winning two pennants. He sold the team in 1999 and passed away in 2009.

These artworks were formerly displayed at Jacob’s Indians offices, and reflect a hometown focus that will appeal to any Indians or baseball fan.

Dale Leadenham’s (1955-2023) Hard Ball, an acrylic on canvas from 1993, measures a whopping 42 by 84in and is striking in its vibrant use of color. It is estimated at $4,000-$6,000.

In classic Norman Rockwell fashion, Bob Leathers’s Going, Going, Gone, a 48 by 48in acrylic on canvas, celebrates the thrill of victory (and in the case of the two dejected Yankee fans shown at the lower right, the agony of defeat) across a classic grouping of Indians fans. It is estimated at $2,000-$4,000.

Cleveland’s own Dexter Davis has the top lot in the sale. His New Birth 2 is a mixed media study using graphite and charcoal acrylic on paper. It is estimated at $5,000-$7,000.

MONMOUTH JUNCTION, N.J. – Kevin Smith was a comic book guy before he was a filmmaker. When he was in the throes of creating what would be his debut and his breakthrough, Clerks, he sold his comic book collection to underwrite its production.

After he hit it big, Smith remained a comic book guy. He used some of his earnings from Clerks to purchase a comic book shop in Red Bank, New Jersey, rechristened it Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash after a pair of minor characters who appeared in Clerks, and relaunched the shop in January 1997. It has since moved locations a few times within Red Bank, but Smith has maintained it to this day while pursuing his Hollywood career.

On Wednesday, September 27, prizes from his personal comic book collection will be offered at Bodnar’s Auction Sales in an event dubbed Kevin Smith’s Comic Art Collection! Each of the 171 lots comes with a certificate of authenticity (COA) signed by Smith, and each lot starts with an opening bid of just $10. Smith will also attend a live broadcast of the sale, ready to furnish comments and insights as only he can.

A percentage of the auction proceeds will support a scholarship fund at the Kubert School, an accredited technical school in Dover, New Jersey that teaches cartooning, sequential art and classes on aspects of the comics industry. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

The lot with the highest estimate is original comic book art from issue #161, page 22 of Daredevil, penciled by Frank Miller and inked by Klaus Janson and depicting a lively and dynamic fight scene between Daredevil and Bullseye. Estimated at $20,000-$40,000, it had been bid up to $21,000 as of September 22 and had 67 watchers on LiveAuctioneers.

Smith has written comic book storylines in addition to his adventures in film and brick-and-mortar retail, and original art from one of his most-respected titles will feature in the auction: Green Arrow: Quiver. Written for DC Comics, Smith literally brought the original Green Arrow, Oliver Queen, back from the dead in this tale. Several lots are devoted to Matt Wagner’s cover art for the series, among them the mixed media color art for issue #11, which is estimated at $1,500-$3,000.

And if that wasn’t enough, the auction lineup contains six lots of original comic book art from the revered DC/Vertigo title Sandman, written by Neil Gaiman. All come from issues late in the run of the series: four from #64, all of which were penciled and inked by Teddy Kristiansen; one from #60, which was penciled by Mark Hempel and inked by D’Isreali; and one from #69, in which Mark Hempel handled both tasks. Lots 50-52 feature the key Sandman character of Morpheus, aka Dream. All six Sandman pages have individual estimates of $1,000-$2,000.

CHICAGO — Magical numbers were achieved in Potter & Potter’s Vintage & Modern Magic sale on August 26, with Harry Houdini, posters from the Golden Age of stage magic and a David Copperfield television-used prop all selling above their estimates. The auction was featured on LiveAuctioneers.

As anticipated, a 1904 theatrical contract between an English theater and Harry Houdini (birth name Erich Weisz), hand-signed by the magician, soared well above its $3,000-$5,000 estimate to land at $12,000 ($15,000 with buyer’s premium). This result continues the trend for strong showings by Houdiniana in the contemporary market.

A Houdini-signed two-volume set of 1859’s Memoirs of Robert-Houdin, written by Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin, who is considered the father of modern magic, reached $26,000 ($32,500 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $6,000-$8,000. Houdini personally inscribed the book to his friend Bernard M.L. Ernst in 1922, and it features additional notations by the magician.

A 1909 promotional poster for ‘Thurston, the world’s greatest magician‘ topped the sale at $36,000 ($45,000 with buyer’s premium). The colorful linen-backed lithograph is one of only a handful known.

A television-used interactive illusion from The Magic of David Copperfield XIV, a 1992 special that aired on CBS, astounded the floor by hammering at $32,000 ($40,000 with buyer’s premium), against an estimate of only $1,000-$2,000. A sheet of glass with 12 recognizable symbols, the custom-made prop was used by Copperfield for an interactive mind-reading effect performed through the television screen for millions of at-home viewers. The item is one of only two Copperfield props ever sold to the public, with the blessing of his organization.

MONROVIA, Calif. — A design study model for what would eventually become the Beethoven monument in Frankfurt, Germany is the top lot in John Moran Auctioneers‘ Traditional Collector sale on Tuesday, September 26. The catalog is now open for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Georg Kolbe (1877-1947) is considered one of the leading German sculptors of his generation. Unfortunately, many of his works have not survived, owing to wartime bombings, melt-downs for military needs or outright confiscation. Those that still exist are found in institutions such as New York’s Museum of Modern Art.

The 33.25in-tall bronze model of his Beethoven monument depicts Ludwig van Beethoven with two female figures from Roman mythology who represent genius. In 1926, Kolbe was asked by the city of Berlin to create a Beethoven statue. He declined, due to limited availability, but returned to the project after the war. He finished the design but died in 1947, before the final could be cast. The monument was eventually installed in Frankfurt in 1951.

The model in Moran’s sale is stamped “GK I / H. Noack / Berlin” for the foundry, and has provenance to the Leonard Hutton Galleries in New York. It is estimated at $30,000-$50,000.

The Qianlong period of Chinese history covered much of the 18th century and saw a boom in prosperity, power and influence. A pair of flambé porcelain fanghu vases bearing a reign mark for the Qianlong period (1736-1795) features streaked transmutation glazing in blue, violent, maroon and pale green. The 12.5in-tall pair is estimated at $15,000-$20,000.

A painting in the style of Pierre Jacques Volaire (1729-1799) is another of the sale’s top lots. A pupil of French landscape painter Claude Joseph Vernet, Volaire also became known for his landscapes and maritime art. 1809 Eruption of Mt. Etna from Castiglione measures 21.5in high by 34.5in wide, appears unsigned and is in overall good condition with minor indications of later touching-up. It is estimated at $10,000-$15,000.
