LOS ANGELES— John Moran Auctioneers‘ first California Living sale of 2024 features the Marmor family collection, which focused on art of the 1960s and 1970s, including works by Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, David Hockney, and Jasper Johns. The sale also has pieces by Sam Maloof, Jonathan Adler, and other mid-century icons. The complete catalog is now open for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Drs. Judd and Katherine Marmor were well acquainted in the LA art scene during the last half of the 20th century. They forged connections with modern and contemporary artists such as William N. Copley, George Herms, Ed Kienholz, Roy Lichtenstein, Ed Ruscha, Frank Stella, and H. C. Westermann. The couple built a large collection of prints and assemblages, were founding members of the Museum of Contemporary Art, and were long-time supporters of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Through their acumen and purchases from artists’ studios and galleries, their collection represents a microcosm of Los Angeles art from this influential period.

Leading the offerings in the Marmor collection is a steel sculpture by Sir Anthony Alfred Caro, Table Piece CCCLXXIII. Caro (1924-2013) was an English abstract sculptor whose work is characterized by assemblages of metal using found industrial objects. Considered one of the greatest British sculptors of his generation, Caro’s 1977 work carries a $40,000-$60,000 estimate.

Peter Alexander (1939-2020) was a member of the Light and Space artist movement in 1960s-era Southern California. Notable for his resin sculptures, the Moran sale includes his Grey Wedge, a 1969 floor sculpture that tapers from a smoky black to a clear resin. It is estimated at $20,000-$30,000.

Highlighting the selection of fine art is Jade Hole, a 1980 work by Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008). He is known for his groundbreaking work in printmaking and photography, inspiring countless innovations and pushing the boundaries of what was possible in the realm of contemporary art. Estimated at $40,000-$60,000, Jade Hole is an example of Rauschenberg’s use of his own photography and multi-media processes, a testament to his commitment to innovation and experimentation.

One of the artists the Marmors befriended was an influential figure in the post-war art world: William Copley (1919-1996). Renowned for his vibrant and audacious pieces that challenged conventional artistic norms, Copley’s body of work is a rich tapestry of narrative compositions, featuring curvilinear figures, bold contours, and a vibrant palette of colors. His legacy is a vital link between European Surrealism and American Pop art, and his Haut Boy from 1970 is estimated at $30,000-$50,000.

Jasper Johns’ Light Bulb from his 1969 Lead Reliefs series is estimated at $20,000-$30,000. The relief is a profound exploration of American cultural symbols encapsulated in lead, revealing the artist’s enduring fascination with mundane objects and their transformation into potent symbols of meaning. The series encapsulates Johns’ lifelong endeavor to destabilize and recontextualize the ordinary, transforming “things the mind already knows” into objects of contemplation and intrigue. At the heart of this piece lies the enigmatic presence of the light bulb, a motif that recurs throughout Johns’ career as a symbol of illumination and artistic creation. The Light Bulb lead relief represents a pivotal moment in Johns’ artistic evolution, showcasing his mastery of medium and his relentless pursuit of visual and conceptual complexity.

Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997) was another artist the Marmors were fortunate to have in their social circle. The couple’s vast print collection included many Lichtensteins, 16 of which are featured in this sale. Among the offerings are CRAK! from 1964, estimated at $15,000-$20,000; multiple works from his 1969 Haystack Series and 1972’s Mirror Series, each estimated at $8,000-$12,000; and examples from his 1970 Modern Head series, with  estimates ranging from $10,000-$20,000. Lichtenstein’s Modern Head series, created in the 1970s, stands as a critical dismantling of the history of Modern Art. This series represents a shift in Lichtenstein’s approach, moving away from mass-produced imagery towards the appropriation of stylistic conventions and specific works of Modern masters, including Picasso, Monet, Matisse, and Mondrian. Each work in the Modern Head series was produced using a distinct commercial printing process, including woodcut, lithography, line-cut, embossing, and die-cut paper overlay.

MONROVIA, Calif. — John Moran Auctioneers presents its first Art of the American West sale of 2024 on Tuesday, March 12 with more than 380 lots ranging from historic to contemporary. The sale includes western bronzes, paintings, Navajo and Pueblo jewelry, Navajo textiles, and Acoma and Zia pottery. The catalog is now open for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Highlighting the fine art offerings is Logan Maxwell Hagege’s High Desert Trail, dated to 2010. Hagege (b. 1980-) is known for his paintings of riders on horseback, Native Americans, cowboys, clouds, cacti, and rocky desert landscapes. With his paintings, art books, and sold-out serigraph print editions, Hagege is showing the way for a younger generation of Western artists. The oil on linen laid to Gatorboard is estimated at $15,000-$20,000.

Representing the 18 examples of bronze sculptures on offer is Highway to Home, a 1998 work created by James Regimbal. Through his very detailed, historically accurate bronzes, Regimbal (b. 1949-) captures all aspects of the 19th-century cowboy’s life. Taking inspiration from true-to-life Western books and movies, his subjects include Indians, warriors, hunters, story tellers, cavalrymen, and bronco busters. The bronze is estimated $4,000-$6,000.

Moran’s sale includes three Frank Patania pieces. Frank Patania, Sr. (1899-1964) was a jeweler who came from the integration of two distinctly different traditions: one European, the other Native American. He drew from a long history of Italian creative spirit, combining technical expertise and artistic imagination. Then, after being introduced to the work of southwest Native American jewelers in the 1920s, Patania’s style drastically transformed. Leading his group is a sterling silver and turquoise concho belt, estimated at $3,000-$5,000.

The sale includes an impressive selection of 84 Navajo items. A Navajo Second Phase chief’s blanket featuring bands of cream and dark brown wool with blue banding and green crosses has a $3,000-5,000 estimate, while a Navajo Late Classic banded blanket woven in blue, red, green, cream, and brown wool, with alternating bands of Moki stripes, is estimated at $3,000-$5,000.

MONROVIA, Calif. — John Moran Auctioneers takes an unusual turn with a keen selection of works from contemporary street artists, mixed with classics from the likes of Jean Dufy, Alice Baber, and Doyle Lane. The Art + Design event is slated for Tuesday, February 27 and is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

A graffiti / street art sketchbook compiled in 1995-1996 by Jared (Geso) Costa (b. 1977-) is the sale’s interesting selection for the top-estimated lot. Created from three taped-together sketchbooks, the collection features hundreds of miniature ‘tags’ (spray-painted graffiti) and other designs from some of the biggest names to emerge in street art from the 1980s, 1990s, and beyond. Contributors include Shepard Fairey, KAWS, Barry (Twist) McGee, Margaret Kilgallen, Ruby Rose Neri, Jared (Geso) Costa, Mr. Element, Spie One, and Grey. The sketchbook is estimated at $30,000-$50,000.

Street artist Alec Andon (b. 1986-) is better known as Alec Monopoly, who interprets the vintage Parker Brothers Monopoly game Milburn ‘Rich Uncle’ Pennybags character in his compositions. This mixed-media on acrylic A portrait of Mr. Monopoly measures 48 by 36in and is in generally good condition. It carries an estimate of $10,000-$15,000.

Jean Dufy (1888-1964) lovingly painted the Parisian sights around him, in stark contrast to the Fauvist designs of his brother Raoul. The sale includes three works by Jean, with Street view with Sacre Coeur in the distance as the lot with the leading estimate. An undated watercolor and gouache on paper, it measures 20 by 25.25in and is estimated at $10,000-$15,000.

Two works by ceramacist Doyle Lane (1923-2002) are included. First up is a classic weed pot from the 1962-1976 period in which Lane created them. Diminutive and sporting a thick speckled blue glaze, it has an estimate of $4,000-$6,000. The second and perhaps even more interesting selection is a grouping of 157 ceramic tiles gathered from Lane’s studio after his death, and then mounted to a plywood backing. Widely exhibited, it is estimated at $15,000-$25,000.

Also on offer is Buried Treasure of the Jaguar, a 1978 watercolor on thick wove paper by abstract expressionist Alice Baber (1928-1982). It is estimated at $4,000-$6,000.

MONROVIA, Calif. – The next Made in Mexico Online event returns to John Moran Auctioneers on Wednesday, February 7 with more than 270 lots of Mexican-made or -inspired fine art, silver, and jewelry, including a large selection of William Spratling items sure to entice collectors. The complete catalog is now open for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

William Spratling (1900-1967) is today considered the ‘father of Mexican silver,’ and for good reason. In 1931, Spratling moved from his home in the United States to live full-time in Taxco, Mexico, with the intent of establishing a thriving silver industry adjoining nearby silver mines. The Spaniards had ramped up silver mining production after their conquest of the Aztecs, but by the 20th century, no real artisan craft industry existed. Spratling industrialized what had previously been considered a hand-crafted industry, and in so doing, created the modern Mexican silver jewelry industry as we know it today.

Moran’s sale includes 32 Spratling lots, and the one with the highest estimate is a spectacular cuff made from silver and rosewood. It dates to the transitional 1944-1946 period, when Spratling sold his firm to an American investor who would ultimately send the thriving business into bankruptcy. The cuff is estimated at $1,000-$1,500.

The sale’s top-estimated lot is a circa-1940s sterling silver coffee and tea service consisting of six pieces and a serving platter. Marked R. J. / Sterling / 925 / Hecho en Mexico, the complete set weighs in at approximately 336.6 oz. troy. It is estimated at $6,000-$9,000.

Originally an apprentice to William Spratling, Antonio Pineda (1919-2009) was one of the first to branch out from Spratling’s Taxco works and into his own, thereby creating the next generation of Mexican silver jewelry. Moran has 16 Pineda lots, lead by a three-piece jewelry set that is apparently difficult to date – the lot notes give its numbers as ‘circa 1953-1979, Taxco, Mexico’. With a necklace and two matching earrings, the lot has an estimate of $1,000-$1,500.

Legendary folk art dealer Fred Davis (1877-1961) had many American artists visit his vacation home in Cuernevaca, where they would produce paintings or take photographs that remain highly valuable to today’s collecting community. Aaron Kilpatrick (1872-1953) was a Canadian American painter of landscapes who created Across the Barranca during a 1925 visit to Davis. Labeled Cuernavaca, Mexico, August 1925 on the 24-by-30in painting’s stretcher, the Davis connection only adds to the artwork’s allure. It is estimated at $2,000-$3,000.

MONROVIA, Calif. — Two titans of 20th-century art photography battled for top honors at John Moran Auctioneers December 6. Complete results are available at LiveAuctioneers.

In the end, there can be only one, and the title went to Imogen Cunningham (1883-1976) for Two Callas from the 1925-1929 period. Signed by the artist and featuring a Mills College (Oakland, California) label, the silver bromide print carried provenance directly back to Cunningham, which clearly helped bidders feel confident. Estimated at $100,000-$200,000, more than two dozen bids landed the print at $230,000 ($303,600 with buyer’s premium).

Landing in second place was Edward Weston (1886-1958), considered the father of art photography. Prologue to a Sad Spring from March of 1920 features his colleague, model and lover Margrethe Mather in a composition imbued with pervasive melancholy. Estimated at $60,000-$80,000, the palladium print hammered for a phenomenal $170,000 ($224,400 with buyer’s premium).

After the two hero lots, sale numbers settled into more expected territory, with Cunningham and Weston trading results. Her Rubber Plant 3, circa 1929, is a silver bromide enlargement print on glossy paper signed and marked with the Mills College stamp; it sold for $25,000 ($33,000 with buyer’s premium) against a $3,000-$5,000 estimate.

Two more Weston lots both focused on his circa-1916 frequent model Enrica (or Enrique) Jackson. Nine portraits of Jackson were gathered into a single lot that brought $12,000 ($15,840 with buyer’s premium) against the presale estimate of $4,000-$6,000. A single portrait titled Enrique sold for $5,500 ($7,260 with buyer’s premium), well above its $1,000-$1,500 estimate.

MONROVIA, Calif. — A forgotten collection of Edward Weston gelatin silver prints — some acquired directly from the photographer by purchase or trade extending back 100 years — have reemerged and will appear at John Moran Auctioneers on Wednesday, December 6. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Weston (1886-1958) is regarded as the father of fine art photography, taking the medium from its pedestrian origins into proper consideration as an art form. Born in Illinois, Weston became a quintessential photographer of California, and much of his subject matter reflects his adopted home.

In 1924, Weston, his son Chandler and a female companion were traveling in Mexico when they happened upon ex-pat Frederick W. (“Fred”) Davis, who had a residence in Cuernavaca. Davis invited the trio to his home, where Weston made an image of a palm tree in Davis’ lush garden. At Weston’s second Mexico City exhibition, Davis acquired the photo of the palm, and the friendship continued for years, with Davis buying more prints from Weston and building a small collection.

Davis eventually passed away, and his belongings were put into long-term storage. Only recently did his descendants open the boxes to discover the long-forgotten Weston prints. The sale includes 23 Westons, eight of which are from the Davis collection.

Edward Weston’s photograph Prologue to a Sad Spring, taken in March 1920, features his photography colleague, model, and erstwhile lover, Margrethe Mather. From the Davis collection, the print is estimated at $60,000-$80,000.

Davis’ garden palm is the featured subject in Weston’s Cuernavaca, taken on the photographer’s 1924 visit to Davis’ Mexican home. It is estimated at $100,000-$200,000.

Imogen Cunningham (1883-1976) is another acclaimed American photographer of nature, nudes and industrial subject matter. The Moran sale includes four of her works, three of which are botanical images. Triangles is a 1928 photograph on her other favorite subject, the human form. The gelatin silver print was given by Cunningham to her assistant in 1975 and carries an estimate of $12,000-$18,000.

Depression-era photography for the Farm Security Administration is how Dorothea Lange (1895-1965) is best remembered today, but her expansive career brought her into contact with a huge swath of America — and the world — as one of the first photojournalists. Portrait of Ruth Alden Langdon, 1921 is a fascinating image she took when she was relatively unknown, featuring a young woman who was a direct descendant of John Alden (1599-1687) of Mayflower fame. The image is estimated at $2,000-$3,000.

MONROVIA, Calif. – The Tuesday, November 21 sale of Modern and Contemporary Fine Art at John Moran Auctioneers is led by a late work in bronze by Peter Voulkos (1924-2002). The monumental 4ft 2in cast titled Alegria was created by the groundbreaking ceramicist alongside Piero Mussi, the owner of Artworks foundry, in 2000.

Voulkos first began working with Mussi in 1986, selecting some of his late ceramic forms – the so-called “stacks” of hand-thrown clay forms – to be cast in bronze. Alegria was made first in stoneware, fired and then used to create a mold for lost-wax casting. A total of six casts were made: an edition of five plus this piece, the artist’s proof. Acquired by the owners from the Frank Lloyd Gallery in Santa Monica in 2001, it is now estimated at $60,000-$80,000.

The 199-lot sale includes two bronzes by Lynn Chadwick (1914-2003) – both the sort of angular figure sculptures that dominated his oeuvre from the 1960s-80s, which he called “Presences” or “Watchers.” Some were made as monumental public sculpture (his first steel sculpture, Two Winged Figures, appeared at an outdoor show in 1962) but others were cast in bronze reductions in small editions.

The larger of these two figures, at 12in high, is Maquette II Walking Woman from 1983, estimated at $45,000-$55,000; with the 9in high Maquette IX Walking Woman in Wind, dating to 1986, is estimated at $25,000-$35,000. Both signed with the edition number 3/7, they were bought together from the Erica Meyerovich Gallery in San Francisco on Christmas Eve in 1987.

Like both Voulkos and Chadwick, the French modernist André Lhote (1885-1962) painted, studied, and wrote until his death on January 24, 1962. Many of his works adhered to Cubist theory, including the colorful 1959 oil on canvas La fenetre a meneaux, depicting an abstracted landscape scene seen through a mullioned window. The picture was first sold in 1961 as part of Lhote’s one-man show at the Paris dealership Maison de la Pensee Francaise and has labels for the Hammer Galleries, New York and the Pomeroy Gallery (later Hoover Gallery), where it was acquired by the owner in 1979. It is estimated at $20,000-$30,000.

Robert Daughters (1929-2013) left a successful career in advertising to embrace art, co-founding an artists’ group known as the Taos 6. Aspens is an oil on canvas dated 1993 that captures Daughters’ late-career interest in post-Impressionism. It is estimated at $5,000-$7,000.

The American West session is topped by Horses pulling a stagecoach, an oil on canvas by Olaf Wieghorst (1899-1988). Originally from Denmark, Wieghorst arrived in the United States in 1918 and rose to become one of the most renowned painters of the American West. The 28 by 38in work is inscribed on the reverse Mail Going East and West, suggesting his original title for the piece. It is estimated at $12,000-$16,000.

The sale also features a selection of David Lemon (b. 1945-) bronze sculptures of various Western themes. Out of Arrows depicts a fierce battle between a bison and an American Indian on horseback. The dramatic patinated bronze carries an estimate of $1,500-$2,500.

MONROVIA, Calif. — Collectors of Japanese Ikebana basketry came out in force for John Moran Auctioneers‘ California Living sale on October 10, sending many lots from a variety of eras and styles well above their estimates. Complete auction results are available at LiveAuctioneers.

Ikebana is the Japanese traditional art form of floral arrangement. Containers for the arrangements are often just as important as the floral design, making them highly desirable objects for collecting.

Kajiwara Aya (b. 1941-) was one of the first women admitted as a full member of the exclusive Japan Craft Arts Association. Her 2004-dated Ikebana basket is a large woven design using bamboo and rattan in a spiral pattern. Fitted with a tomobako (or storage box), this stunning design exceeded its $2,000-$3,000 estimate to hammer at $4,750 (or $6,270 with buyer’s premium).

With a family background of making functional bamboo items for the home, Hondo Syoryu (b. 1951-) seemed predestined to ultimately create artworks in the family medium. His 21st-century bamboo sculpture from a private collection is believed to be titled Undulation, and is signed at its base. Estimated at $500-$700, it sold for a whopping $5,000 ($6,600 with buyer’s premium), making it the top woven item for the entire auction.

Kawano Shoko (b. 1957-) is a contemporary basket artist whose earlier career was in sculpture, an influence seen in many of his works. Birth, from 2005, is signed in kanji by the artist at the base, and has clear provenance from the Tai Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, through the estate of Eleanor Koffler, the consignor. It hammered at $4,000 ($5,280 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $1,000-$1,500.

MONROVIA, Calif. — A 1956 oil on canvas by Ludwig Blum hammered at more than twice its top estimate in a surprise performance at The Traditional Collector sale held at John Moran Auctioneers on September 26. Complete sale results are now available at LiveAuctioneers.

Known as the “painter of Jerusalem,” Blum (1891-1975) emigrated to Palestine in the 1920s as part of the Third Aliyah. As an ardent Zionist, he established himself as a painter of the Jewish experience, creating scenes of the landscape, religious sites, and more. City of Jerusalem was estimated at $4,000-$6,000, but hammered at $14,000 ($18,480 with buyer’s premium).

A pair of Chinese enameled porcelain jars estimated by Moran to date to the “18th/19th century or later” also exceeded expectations. Estimated at $2,000-$3,000, the jars earned $6,500 ($8,450 with buyer’s premium).

The sale’s top lot was the Georg Kolbe (1877-1947) model for the Beethoven Monument that was ultimately installed in 1951 after Kolbe’s death. It achieved $22,500 ($29,700 with buyer’s premium), under its $30,000-$50,000 estimate.

Before recorded music took the culture by storm in the 1920s, automatic machines brought the magic of music into homes. A Regina Corona music box with self-changing technology hit its top estimate at $6,000 ($7,920 with buyer’s premium). It plays 27in metal discs marked with small cuts to trigger musical note playback. They are akin to the paper rolls used in vintage player pianos, but are much sturdier and longer-lived due to their metallic construction.

Alfred Robert Hayward (1875-1971) was an English painter who was most active in the early 20th century. This oil on canvas, On the Balcony, dates to 1909 and was noted to have large areas of retouching. Bidders were not deterred, sending the artwork well above its top estimate at $5,000 ($6,500 with buyer’s premium).
