STANSTED MOUNTFITCHET, U.K. — Sworders will conduct an auction on Thursday, January 25 devoted to the personal collection of Maurice Turpin (1928-2005). Known throughout the trade as ‘Dick,’ he achieved near legendary status in the course of a 50-year career as an antiques dealer.

During what’s been called the ‘golden age’ of the English antique furniture business, Turpin was a familiar sight at regional U.K. salerooms and was one of the first British dealers to undertake frequent buying trips to the U.S. The caliber of the pieces that he bought and sold was only surpassed by his persona; a giant of a man with a large walrus moustache, thick-rimmed spectacles and a trilby hat, he had a curiously high-pitched voice.

Following his death in 2005, the stock from his Bruton Street shop was dispersed in two sales at Christie’s, both titled The Legend of Dick Turpin. Sworders will sell the contents of the flat in London W14 he shared with partner Jackie Mann. The auction of 267 lots will simply be titled Dick Turpin: The Legend Lives On.

Leading the sale is a George III padouk and kingwood commode attributed to one of the great figures of British furniture history, John Cobb (circa 1715-1778). Of serpentine outline with ormolu mounts and a matched-veneered top, it carries an estimate of £30,000-£50,000 ($37,610-$62,680).

The auction also includes spectacular classics such as a pair of George III blue john and ormolu ‘Cleopatra’ candle vases attributed to Matthew Boulton (estimated at £2,000-£4,000, or $2,500-$5,015) and an Italian bronze group of Hercules and the Nemean Lion after the antique (estimated at £1,000-£2,000, or $1,250-$2,500). Both were areas in which Turpin held considerable expertise.

A pair of the distinctive ‘basso relievo’ embossed bird pictures by Samuel Dixon of Dublin, circa 1750, also appear in the sale lineup. The hand-colored prints Canary Bird with a Group of Flowers and The Cock Butcher Bird with a Group of Flowers are both signed and dedicated ‘To Her Grace the Duchess of Hamilton.’ They are estimated at £3,000-£5,000 ($3,760-$6,260).

Less expected from a dealer who bought what were considered ‘period’ antiques are four inter-war bronzes by Sir Jacob Epstein (1880-1959). The quartet of portrait busts includes casts of the First Portrait of Lillian Shelley and the Eighth Portrait of Peggy Jean, estimated at £2,000-£3,000 ($2,500-$3,7610) and £1,500-£2,000 ($1,880-2,500), respectively.

NEW YORK – Three exceptional George II-period chairs lead the line in the Thursday, January 25 Old Masters, English & Continental Furniture auction at Doyle. They are among the English furnishings from the Manhattan Upper East Side apartment of Wall Street research analyst Gerard Manolovici (1937-2020). There are 23 lots from the estate in this sale, with paintings and Asian works of art to be included in subsequent auctions.

A circa-1735 armchair attributed to the London cabinetmaker Giles Grendey (1693-1780) is considered one of the great models of the period. It has a shell-carved crest rail, arms with lion head terminals, and cabriole legs with shell-carved knees and claw-and-ball feet. Several examples from a once large and impressive set are known, including the celebrated chair from the Percival Griffiths collection, now in the Bryan collection in Illinois. Doyle’s chair is stamped I, with the Bryan chair numbered XIII. It is estimated at $40,000-$60,000.

A single George II walnut side chair after a similar muscular Grendey model is estimated at $30,000-$50,000. It is one of two chairs in the Manolovici dispersal previously in the great English furniture collection formed by Samuel Messer. Heeding the advice of the authority Robert Wemyss Symonds, both were acquired by Messer in the 1950s and sold as part of Christie’s sale of his collection in 1991.

This period of English furniture also ushers in the age of mahogany and the English rococo. Also with a Messer provenance is a mahogany armchair dating to circa 1750 with an elegant ‘French’ serpentine frame, estimated at $40,000-$60,000. The maker is unknown, but the design is among those that feature in the eight Books of Ornament published annually in London from 1741 by William de la Cour (1700-1767). Again, the chair was once part of a larger set; other examples were sold at Christie’s in both New York and London in 2006, hammering for $150,000 and £72,000 (roughly $91,200) respectively.

Thirteen lots of French faïence from the estate of Sidney R. Knafel are being sold to benefit the Detroit Institute of Arts. Knafel collected for close to 50 years, assembling the collection of tin-glazed earthenware illustrated in the 2016 reference book French Faience: The Sidney R. Knafel Collection.

Particular high points are a charming pair of 18th-century Marseille duck-form tureens and covers naturalistically modeled, colored as a male and female, and estimated at $30,000-$50,000; and a massive Nevers wine cistern decorated with mythological scenes and estimated at $10,000-$15,000. It was fitted with a pewter mask-head spigot at a later date, probably because at 22in high it was simply too heavy to pour.

The sale is preceded on Wednesday, January 24 by a Doyle auction of Fabergé & Vertu and English & Continental Silver. Of particular note is a Fabergé hardstone carving of a donkey worked in agate with diamond-set eyes. The 2in (5cm) model is a copy of another made in chalcedony in the Royal Collection, ordered by King Edward VII from Fabergé’s London shop in 1907 as part of the renowned Sandringham Commission. At the turn of the century, an Italian donkey was kept at Sandringham, the royal residence in Norfolk, and used by the young princes and princesses to draw a carriage. Offered in the original fitted wood case, the Fabergé donkey figure is estimated at $10,000-$15,000.

A pair of William IV wine coolers dating to 1834, with marks for the royal goldsmith Benjamin Smith of London, has been consigned from ‘the collection of an international multi-generational family’ with an estimate of $20,000-$30,000. The campana-form model on the theme of wine includes grape clusters and handles modeled as vine branches, with this pair engraved with the arms of the Ald family.

BERKELEY, Calif. – More than 450 lots of fine literature and ephemera with science fiction, fantasy, mysteries, Beat Generation and counterculture items along with a selection of surfing memorabilia and poster art will come to PBA Galleries on Thursday, January 25. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

A personally signed and annotated Gideon Holy Bible taken from a Las Vegas hotel room by ‘gonzo journalist’ Hunter S. Thompson (1937-2005) is a leading contender for the oddball of the sale. With a publication date of 1958, this copy would have been exceedingly old by the time Thompson made a name for himself with 1967’s Hells Angels, his breakthrough work. It was purchased directly from Thompson’s Woody Creek, Colorado home in the mid-1990s. As Thompson wrote in 1998’s Generation of Swine, “I have stolen more quotes and thoughts and purely elegant little starbursts of writing from the Book of Revelation than anything else in the English language – and it is not because I am a biblical scholar, or because of any religious faith, but because I love the wild power of the language and the purity of the madness that governs it and makes it music … [the Gideons] have saved me many times, when nobody else could do anything but mutter about calling security on me unless I turned out my lights and went to sleep like all the others … ” The Bible is estimated at $10,000-$15,000.

An early entrant to the realm of science fiction literature is 1884’s Flatland, A Romance of Many Dimensions by Rev. Edwin Abbott (1838-1926). A 1980 reissue of the work – which was encased in aluminum and features an accordion-fold format – has text that can be opened to read as a square, and, when unfolded, extends to 33 feet per side. The first half of the book is printed on one side, the second on the opposite. With an introduction by sci-fi legend Ray Bradbury, and signed by him, this copy is number 120 of 275 and is estimated at $3,000-$5,000.

An 1876 first printing of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain (aka Samuel Clemens, 1835-1910) is notable for retaining its original sheepskin binding, a rarity among Tom Sawyer editions printed by the American Publishing Company of Hartford, Connecticut. It is estimated at $7,000-$10,000.

By the time Jack Kerouac typewrote and signed this 1968 letter to his niece – focusing primarily on the antics of his two house cats – the Beat Generation writer’s original vision for the ‘counterculture’ was spinning out of control in American politics and popular culture. “Pitou just ran out again. He’s white as snow from the white sand around here. He has a favorite tree in the yard and he goes way out on the limb and looks down at me with the stars above him.” The letter carries an estimate of $7,000-$10,000.

One of the most beloved authors and illustrators of all time, Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) created a wonderful world of animal characters known to generations. Her 1904 release of The Tale of Benjamin Bunny continued the series, and this first edition copy published by Frederick Warne and Co. in London is in remarkable condition despite it having been clearly loved by its original owner. The lot also includes a later edition, and the pair are estimated at $1,000-$1,500.

PHILADELPHIA — An archive related to the Wedgwood Liberty Ware project designed to raise money for victims of the First World War will be offered at Freeman’s on Thursday, January 25. It carries an estimate of $8,000-$12,000 as part of the third tranche of the remarkable Ellis and Suzanne Rubin collection of Wedgwood ceramics. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

The driving force behind Liberty Ware was the Baltimore society figure Lillian Gary Taylor (1885-1961). She created the design – a center shield with the American stars and stripes, surrounded by the flags of the 11 Allied countries – and used her wealth and connections to sell more than 9,000 pieces.

Alongside two Liberty Ware tea services, one in bone china and another in Queensware, this archive includes two albums she assembled that together document the entire project, from the original Wedgwood factory proof designs to arrangements with the wholesalers William H. Plummer & Co. Included alongside letters, original drawings, receipts, invoices, and canceled checks are personal notes of thanks for tea services sent to important dignitaries, among them President Woodrow Wilson, former President Theodore Roosevelt, and then-British Prime Minister Lord Arthur Balfour.

Freeman’s is currently selling the far-reaching Rubin collection across a number of sales. The content, displayed together in the couple’s Bucks County, Pennsylvania home, represents 60 years of collecting. It spans the entire history of Wedgwood factory production from the 18th century to the 20th century.

Following two exclusively Wedgwood auctions in 2023, this 305-lot offering begins with the neoclassical forms made in the 1770s under the Wedgwood & Bentley partnership and closes with some of the factory’s more adventurous 21st-century models. In between are multiple examples of black basalt, caneware, jasperware, creamware, majolica, pate-sur-pate and the 1930s designs of Alfred Powell and Keith Murray.

Various iterations of Daisy Makeig-Jones’ Fairyland lustre ware number close to 40 lots. Particularly scarce are pieces in the so-called Nizami range, inspired by Persian literature and named after the 12th-century dramatic poet Nizami (1140-1203). Made in the 1920s, these survive in small numbers. A cup and saucer and a rectangular box and cover are estimated at $4,000-$6,000 and $3,000-$5,000 respectively. Both had been bought by the Rubins at James D. Julia sales in 2015 and 2005.

Rubin pieces by other British factories in this sale include those by William de Morgan, Royal Doulton, Royal Worcester, and George Jones, plus some Continental wares by KPM and Wilhelm Schiller.
