PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Fontaine’s Auction Gallery presents a two-day Fine & Decorative Arts auction that will include more than 750 lots of 19th- and 20th-century lighting, art glass, leaded glass windows, fine silver, porcelain, marble and bronze statuary, paintings, American and European furniture, clocks, watches, and jewelry. The Saturday, January 27 and Sunday, January 28 catalogs are now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

More than 50 Tiffany Studios lots headline the auction. Dating to circa 1910 is the sale’s highest-estimated lot, a Peony table lamp with a four-footed stand mounted to wood. Consigned from a New York estate, the lamp carries a $125,000-$175,000 estimate. Also included is a collection of favrile glass fragments from Tiffany Studios, all 3in in length or smaller. They also date to around 1910 and are together estimated at $1,000-$1,500.

Birger Sandzén (1871-1954) loved visiting and painting Rocky Mountain State Park in Colorado, and Mountain Lake is a classic example of his highly sought-after work. The oil on board dates to around 1943 and is accompanied by an appraisal from the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery. The lot is estimated at $30,000-$50,000.

A circa-1900 American stained glass window depicts a man playing the flute, a dancing maiden with cymbals, and two women and a child observing. An array of foliage and flowers is set behind the figures with a Greek key border, a column and a torch. The 61 by 62in window is estimated at $20,000-$30,000.

Rounding out the highlights is a 19th-century Moorish inlaid wood wedding bench that is estimated at $5,000-$7,500.

LONDON – The sale of Fine Ancient Art & Antiquities at Apollo Art Auctions on Sunday, January 28 is headed by the Prince collection – a private assemblage of more than 150 pieces of Neolithic, Egyptian, Hittite, Greco-Roman, and Near Eastern art. Formed from the 1990s through 2014, most pieces were acquired through leading European dealers. It will be followed on Monday, January 29 by a Chinese and Islamic Art auction. The catalogs for both are now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

A pleasing selection of Egyptian faience fragments and inlays includes two large foundation tiles believed to have come from the Pi-Ramesses palace in Qantir. Each is decorated in black with an inscribed cartouche, one carrying the prenomen and the other the nomen of Ramesses the Great. Similar to an example at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the tiles were part of a Belgian private collection prior to joining the Prince collection. The starting bid is £8,000 ($10,190).

Several shards on offer were those collected by the Victorian Egyptologist Rev. William MacGregor (1848–1937). His collection, which formed part of an exhibition at the Burlington Fine Arts Club in 1895, was later dispersed, with these pieces sold through the Parisian works of art dealer Joseph Altounian (1890-1954). An opening bid of £1,000 ($1,270) is invited for a New Kingdom 18th Dynasty green and yellow inlay in the form of a lotus flower.

Also featured are two 19th Dynasty rosette inlays once owned by Daniel Marie Fouquet (1850-1921), a French doctor who lived in Cairo and whose collection of antiquities was dispersed at the Drouot in Paris in 1922. The lot is estimated at £6,000-£9,000 ($7,610-$11,410).

From another source is a Roman marble head of Harpocrates – the Hellenistic god of silence, secrets and confidentiality. This model, dated to around the 2nd century AD, depicts him with youthful and expressive features, including a subtle, enigmatic smile. It has an ownership history from before the 1960s and most recently appeared at auction in 2018 at Bonhams. Apollo has assigned a starting bid of £20,000 ($25,470).

One of the finest examples of ancient armor offered by Apollo director Dr. Ivan Bonchev since the firm was founded in 2010 is a Roman bronze Weisenau, or Imperial, helmet. The form — the final evolutionary stage of the legionary helmet — is distinctive for its mushroom-shape peak, a massive visor with a serrated edge, as well as its contoured neck guard and hinged cheek pieces. The helmet’s provenance includes successive European private collections, including the Charles Delaporte collection in the 1960s. It will open at £30,000 ($38,165).

More than 100 pieces of ancient jewelry are headed by a circa-3rd century BC Greek Hellenistic gold finger ring engraved with a portrait of Zeus, and a Ptolemaic gold finger ring set with a carnelian intaglio engraved with a crocodile. Given starting bids of £10,000 ($12,725) and £3,000 ($3,815) respectively, both were recently in a London private collection.

A fine selection of classical pottery includes a late 4th or 3rd century BC Attic red-figure bell krater with Dionysiac decoration attributed to the Telos Painter – it has a starting bid of £8,000 ($10,190) – while leading a group of Chinese terracotta figures is a model of a recumbent, braying Bactrian camel offered with a thermoluminescence test dating it to the Tang period (618-907 AD). Acquired in Hong Kong in the 1990s, it has a starting bid of £3,000 ($3,815).

As stated above, on Monday, January 29, Apollo will also hold a sale titled Fine Chinese & Islamic Art. WINDSOR, Conn. — A huge, 625-lot sale of mid-century art and furnishings is the focus of Nadeau’s Auction Gallery on Saturday, January 27. Bidding is now available at LiveAuctioneers.

Gio Ponti (1891-1979) is a giant among 20th-century designers. A Renaissance man, Ponti served as an architect, industrial designer, furniture designer and more across his amazing career. Ponti’s furniture receives strong attention from mid-century modern collectors. Nadeau’s top-estimated lot is a Ponti design for M. Singer & Sons. The walnut double dresser features industrial geometry and is one of Ponti’s more iconic designs for the American furniture retailer. It is estimated at $10,000-$15,000.

The collaboration between Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) and Madoura Plein Den pottery works continues to entice collectors more than 60 years after the first items came to market. This earthenware face plate is from 1968 or 1969 and carries all the standard Madoura markings, including indicating it is number 48 of a 100-piece series. It carries an estimate of $5,000-$10,000.

Gaetano Bellei (1857-1922) is a beloved Italian genre painter who had the ability to create photographic portrayals of people while capturing the human spirit in every work he produced. Three Children Behind an Opera Curtain (Modena) is an undated oil on canvas depicting mischievous children peering from behind a velvet curtain. Measuring 35 by 26in, the Bellei is estimated at $3,000-$5,000.

Fewer designers had greater impact on 20th-century culture than Raymond Loewy (1893-1986). From toasters to Pennsylvania Railroad steam locomotives, Studebaker cars to the Shell Oil logo, Loewy’s work touched millions. His 1965 design for Doubinsky Frères of France created this DF2000 sideboard from orange and red ABS plastic. It is estimated at $3,000-$5,000.

R. Kenton Nelson (b. 1954-) is a Pasadena, California-based painter who finds inspiration in classic 1950s advertising art. Nadeau’s has two works of his, purchased apparently simultaneously for $11,000 each from Salzburg Gallery in 2005. Digging and Delving is a 2005 work depicting a detail of a classically dressed man poring through numerous books, and is estimated at $3,000-$5,000. Pitchfork is also from 2005, and carries a $2,000-$4,000 estimate.

RENO, Nev. – Holabird kicks off its 2024 season with two back-to-back sales, collectively called Marvels of the West. The first will run as a timed-online auction at LiveAuctioneers Thursday, January 25 and Friday, January 26. The other auction will be a traditional live auction, also carried on LiveAuctioneers, slated for Saturday, January 27 and Sunday, January 28.

Both events will contain about 500-600 lots per day, covering Western and Native Americana, Gold Rush, mining, coins and currency, railroadiana, tokens, philatelic items, bottles, ephemera and more.

“We know people love our live auctions, but don’t miss the timed online-only sales,” said Fred Holabird, president and owner of Holabird Western Americana, LLC. “The timed online sale provides a chance for collectors to compete for less expensive items on their own terms of value.”

The live sale is headed by a remarkable and historic handwritten 1833 letter delivered to a U.S. Indian Agent and intended for publication in the Buffalo Journal, an obscure, short-lived newspaper for which no copies have been digitalized, let alone determining how many still exist in any form. Here, the Chiefs of the Six Nations proclaimed through this signed document, written for them by their Indian Agent, that they had no interest and would not trade any more of their lands at the government’s request.

Apparently, skullduggery had taken place between some United States government officials, agents, and a few lesser chiefs to acquire key land parcels in a dubious scheme without the permission or knowledge of the Council of the Six Nations. In the document, the Chiefs of the Six Nations at Council unilaterally proclaimed, “The Chiefs belong to the Nations, not the Nations to the Chiefs” … in short, it states that the chiefs cannot act individually or without consent of the Council for their own benefit. The document carries an estimate of $5,000-$10,000.

A major collection of railroad dining ware continues to emerge at successive Holabird sales. This Gulf, Mobile & Ohio dinnerware set dates to 1950 and is in excellent condition. It is estimated at $2,500-$5,000.

Also included is the Ken Prag railroad and mining stock collection, to be sold in the timed auction on Days 1 and 2. Offered will be hundreds of different U.S. railroad stocks, some of which haven’t been seen in years. Holabird snuck in a few ‘ringers’, such as a stock signed by Declaration of Independence signer Robert Morris. It is estimated at $300-$600.

Longtime Holabird friend Ron Reed passed away last year, and his family asked the house to sell his collection of Colorado embossed bottles. Reed had purchased a number of key pieces out of the previous Gary Bracken sales, so those are now available. A set of three Pueblo dosage (aka shot) glasses carries the top estimate of the collection at $300-$400, while a coffin-shaped liquor bottle marked Victor, Colo. has a broad estimate of $600-$20,000.

A set of 21 promotional paperweights fashioned as miniatures of landmark American steam and diesel locomotives is included in the sale. Most were made by the locomotive manufacturers, given to railroad executives, and decorated to look like their line, with cast legends of each locomotive’s identity. The set includes 12 duplicates and is estimated at $1,500-$3,000.

Squash blossom necklaces boast a flourishing market

NEW YORK — While there is some debate over exactly how squash blossom necklaces got their name, one thing is for certain: they are among the most important forms of Native American jewelry to come out of the American Southwest. Named for the large petal-like stones — typically turquoise — that are set to look like the flowers on a squash plant, these necklaces have three key parts: the gems that comprise the squash blossoms, the smaller round beads surrounding them, and the naja, a horseshoe or crescent-shaped pendant hanging from the bottom.

Much of the appeal of squash blossom necklaces comes from the stones that are used. That definitely was the case with a silver and turquoise squash blossom necklace, likely Navajo in origin, which attained $25,000 plus the buyer’s premium in July 2023 at Alex Cooper Auctioneers. “The turquoise in this necklace is native to the American Southwest region,” said Selden Morgan, director of sales and fine jewelry at Alex Cooper Auctioneers, which has offices in Towson, Maryland and Washington, D.C. “It is exceptional, well matched and rare, a type called spiderweb. The silver is composed of expertly crafted squash blossoms, a traditional bead necklace, fine rope details and naja. It exhibits an exemplary balance between turquoise and traditional silver work.”

Not all turquoise is created equally. It is a rather soft and porous stone that easily chips and cracks, which is why it is often “stabilized” or hardened with other materials, explained Erin Rust, a Native American art specialist at Hindman in Chicago. “However, there is a rather small proportion of turquoise that is considered high-quality gem-grade stones. These stones are harder and more luminous in color,” she said.

Some of the best-regarded examples of turquoise emerged from the Lander Blue Mine in Nevada, which was mined briefly in the 1970s and is believed to have only produced roughly 100 pounds of high-grade material. A piece that might include stones from the mine is a silver squash blossom necklace with 12 blossoms, each with a single high-grade spiderweb turquoise stone and offered with a pair of matching earrings, which earned $13,000 plus the buyer’s premium in May 2019 at Hindman.

“The turquoise is what sets this necklace apart. The stones on this particular necklace have similar characteristics to those of the Lander Blue Mine. The high contrast between the dark ‘spiderweb’ matrix and rich turquoise color is very desirable and only found in a few mines,” Rust said. “Without documentation, we cannot say for sure that the stones in this necklace are Lander. However, the necklace is from the correct period of time. The stones are very high quality, with similar characteristics such as the high luster, depth of color, and webbing matrix, which, in the end, is what drove the price.”

Collectors pounce on necklaces that feature Lander turquoise, such as a circa-1970 Lander turquoise and silver squash blossom necklace attributed to the Diné (Navajo) people that had about 90 carats of the coveted stone. The necklace made $19,000 plus the buyer’s premium at Santa Fe Art Auction in August 2022.

Generally speaking, the three basic attributes Rust looks for in squash blossom necklaces are:

  • Age – is the piece an early example from the turn of the previous century, or is it modern?
  • Artist – if the piece is a modern example, is it marked or attributed to a specific known artist?
  • Stone quality – if there are stones, are they high-grade, gem-quality stones that are neither stabilized nor dyed?

“Quality craftsmanship and well-matched turquoise are highly desirable aspects of a squash blossom necklace,” Morgan said. “Collectors may also consider the size of the naja, the proportions of the necklace, and whether the piece is signed. One with rare, well-matched turquoise in very good condition with well-defined blossoms would be highly collectible.”

According to the website for the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology in Albuquerque, New Mexico, “The history of the origins of squash blossom necklaces is unclear, but they are believed to have been first made in the late 19th century by Native artists.” The naja centerpiece, which is mostly seen as a fertility symbol or used for protection, may have been a North African design that was assimilated by Spanish settlers moving north from Mexico. This form was then exposed to the Southwest peoples. The pomegranate-like shape of the squash blossom design and the horseshoe shape of the naja are both evocative of Spanish culture, which Native peoples often borrowed and interpreted.

Some also say that by the 1870s, Spanish soldiers may have begun trading these necklaces to the Navajo people. They were the first group of Native Americans to begin crafting squash blossom necklaces, and these observers claim that the necklaces represent a blending of Spanish and Native American cultures. The Zuni and Hopi tribal communities are believed to have adopted the necklace design by the 1890s. According to the museum, the earliest examples of squash blossom necklaces were made from silver collected by melting down Spanish or American coins, but later, sheet metal was used in silversmithing.

While squash blossom necklaces don’t appear to have had specific ceremonial uses within Native cultures, they seem to have served as status symbols for those who wore them. The more intricate the necklace, the more valued or important the person was.

Those living beyond the Southwest first became interested in squash blossom necklaces in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when railroads brought tourist trade to the region. Demand really kicked off in the 1960s when publications and exhibitions brought Native American crafts to a broader audience, Morgan said. The advent of The Institute of American Indian Art in Santa Fe and the Scottsdale Show in Arizona, which both supported and held competitions for artists, caused a production surge.

The appetite for beautiful, thoughtfully designed squash blossom necklaces has yet to abate. A Navajo example with a slightly unusual look made $16,000 plus the buyer’s premium at Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates in June 2022. Set with 18 blossoms, the silver necklace featured a double-form naja that was closed. Buyers evidently liked this style as this piece performed markedly well.

Another interesting take on this classic form was a circa-1940 sterling silver and turquoise box and bow squash blossom necklace, which brought $8,000 at Santa Fe Art Auction in November 2023. The pair of seven turquoise beads running up the sides of the necklace are shaped like bows.

Although most squash blossom necklaces are made with turquoise, this is not always the case. Native American artists have long been interested in coral, and perhaps the best coral in the world comes from the Mediterranean. Squash blossom necklaces that showcase coral typically do not bring as much money as those with turquoise, but they are still cherished by buyers. A snapshot of today’s squash blossom necklace market indicates that it is strong and healthy, especially for vintage examples. “From our experience, buyers are willing to pay increasingly higher prices for quality Native American jewelry. The majority of the jewelry we are seeing come onto the market are pieces purchased decades ago in the Southwest, which have been residing in private collections ever since,” Morgan said. “They are becoming available as people downsize and are ready to give their jewelry a new life with a new owner. These pieces are primarily being sought after by American collectors, though there is international interest as well.”

Rust echoed Morgan’s comments, noting,“The auction market for good, high-quality squash blossoms is holding strong and bringing commanding prices. However, I have noticed that the middle- and lower-market pieces have been a little harder of a sell, bringing less than the past few years.”

Morgan said while there are pieces that go for in excess of $20,000, many more are available at prices better suited to beginning collectors, and added, “It is a great time to get into collecting Native American jewelry and craft. The Navajo excel at metalwork and produce many of the quintessentially regarded squash blossom necklaces, but the Zuni are expert carvers of turquoise and furnished the Navajo with many of the stones used in the squash blossom necklaces, as well as crafting beautiful and seemingly delicate pieces of their own.”
