NEW YORK – Sitting inside and busying oneself isn’t just a pandemic thing. Jasper52‘s Americana, Quilts & Textiles sale, which starts April 15 at 6 pm Eastern time, provides ample proof of that fact. The auction features 190 lots of fabric art of every type imaginable, from Quaker schoolgirl samplers to impressively large Navajo rugs to 19th-century quilts in head-turning designs. In each case, the item offered reflects a high standard of craftsmanship and unique creativity. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
A prime example of the latter type of fabric art is a circa-1870s quilt in a spellbinding pinwheel stars pattern, estimated at $1,500-$2,000. Described in auction-catalog notes as “outstanding,” the quilt measures 86 by 86in and survives in mint, never-washed condition.
Also notable is a Nine Partners School Quaker sampler dating to 1820 and estimated at $3,000-$3,500. Stitched by Mary B. Jones, a student at the New York state boarding school, which closed in 1863, it features a verse by Edward Young titled An Address to the Deity. It measures about 16 1/4 by 13 1/2in out of its frame.
Rounding out the highlights of the Jasper52 fabric art sale is a Navajo Ganado rug made sometime between 1915-1930. Regarded as large, the red, white, grey, and black rug measures more than seven feet tall by five feet wide and features a bold, large sawtoothed pattern in the form of the letter “X.”
