NEW YORK – On Thursday, October 28, starting at 6 pm Eastern time, Jasper52 will offer a 424-lot sale of Americana, Folk Art, and Outsider Art. As always, the auction is curated by Clifford Wallach, an expert in tramp art, folk art, and Americana. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Schoolgirl samplers are perennial favorites because they open a window on a long-lost way of American life. An 1838 silk and wool on linen sampler stitched by Eliza C. McCullow is no different. Her work contains 11 lines of family history, noting 10 births and one marriage that took place between 1787 and 1834 (but, interestingly, she did not choose to record any deaths). McCullow was 12 or 13 when she created the sampler, and she was one of six girls and two boys born to Hannah Rockhill and Joseph McCullow. The family lived in Tuckerton, New Jersey, which is a port town on the New Jersey shore. The bottom half of the sampler features pictorial motifs including a shepherd with his dog, sheep, a baby lamb, birds and flowers. It is surrounded on three sides with a foliate border and across the bottom is a sawtooth and star border. It is estimated at $5,500-$6,000.

A second lot of note is a late 17th-century Bristol delft plate depicting Adam and Eve, and estimated at $6,000-$7,000. Identified as a charger, a large, decorative plate typically placed in a table setting at the start of a meal and removed to make way for more functional dishes, it measures slightly more than 13in in diameter. The oddly muscular Biblical couple are depicted below the Tree of Knowledge, each holding a piece of forbidden fruit.

Another head-turner is a circa 1870-1880 copper and zinc horse weathervane in the celebrated Ethan Allen form, which makes for a distinctly handsome silhouette. It features a zinc head over a molded copper body and tail, as well as a flat molded cut mane. It carries an estimate of $2,000-$2,500.
