SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – The big winner at the September 24 sale at Fine Estate, Inc. was this example of Anglo-Indian silver. The 7 1/2in (18cm) covered beaker marked for Hamilton & Co. Jewellers, Calcutta was estimated at $400-$600, but hammered for $3,250 ($4,160 including buyer’s premium).

Unlike the later so-called ‘kutch’ silver that was made by Indian craftsmen, often for export to the West, Anglo-Indian silver was typically made by English and Scottish silversmiths who relocated to the subcontinent. In search of fortune and adventure in the days of the Raj, they set up workshops and boutiques in the major cities and trading posts of Calcutta, Madras and Bombay. Most of their output followed forms and designs seen in Britain, with the occasional India twist.

Hamilton & Co. was founded in 1808 by Robert Hamilton at 5 Tank Square in Calcutta (modern day Kolkata) under license from the East India Company. Catering to members of the British government as well as the Indian aristocracy, the business survived independence in 1947 but finally closed in 1973.

In the absence of a proper assay system, the firm used a variety of maker’s marks similar to those employed in England and Scotland. The elephant mark to this beaker is one used from 1860-1912. The engraved crest of a starburst above a scimitar with the motto ‘Ever Loyal’ suggests it was made for a member of the British Raj. Although cataloged as a cocktail shaker, it is more likely simply a covered beaker – one of the many hybrid culinary objects made to meet the requirements of life in the subcontinent, where keeping flies at bay and countering the intense heat was a central pastime.

GLEN COVE, N.Y. – Interest and values continue to grow for famed Jewish subject matter painter Jack Itshak Holtz (1925-2018). His 1968 piece Jerusalem hammered at $22,500, selling for $28,800 including buyer’s premium at Roland NY’s September 2023 Estates Sale on September 23.

Estimated at $5,000-$8,000, the lot sold for a single bid well beyond expectations, showing the determination of the buyer to own the lot. Depicting a bucolic view of the Jerusalem skyline in an impressionistic manner, Holtz’s painting was described as being in “very good condition.”

Itshak “Jack” Holtz was born near Warsaw, Poland and his family emigrated to Jerusalem in 1935. Holtz was fascinated by his father’s ability to sketch detailed images, ultimately driving him to art school to develop his own talent. A deeply religious man, Holtz was quoted as saying, “You have to live that religious life to fully capture it on canvas.” Two other Holtz items in the sale, portraits of individuals, performed within or below estimates, making Jerusalem’s performance all the more remarkable.

AUSTIN, Texas – On the third day of Austin Auction Gallery‘s September 22-24 auction, this portrait of Napoleon hammered for $15,000 ($19,050 including buyer’s premium) – a multiple of the estimate of $800-$1,200. This particular pose is one taken from The Emperor Napoleon in His Study in the Tulieries, an 1812 painting by Jacques-Louis David, in which a slightly disheveled emperor turns his face to look at the viewer, with his right hand tucked into his jacket. He wears the uniform of a colonel in the Imperial Guard Foot Grenadiers – a group of elite soldiers that Napoleon personally commanded – and the medals of two institutions he founded, the Order of the Iron Crown and the Legion of Honor.

This 2ft 4in by 23in version, cataloged as ‘after Jacques-Louis David,’ was undated but is probably a contemporary copy rather than one of the later 19th-century creations made during the Bonapartism era. It was consigned from the estate of Austin designer Robert Garrett. For five decades, he and his partner Arthur Watson resided in one of the city’s most remarkable homes, a mansion built in 1853 by the sister-in-law of Jim Bowie.

Titled Satan when it was first exhibited in plaster at the Salon of 1834 and cast in bronze the following year, it proved an influential work for its Romantic portrayal of Mephistopheles as a melancholic rather than a monstrous creature. One commentator wrote: “Among all the angels and demons, there is one figure that incontestably merits particular attention because of the original character it has been imprinted with, because of the novelty of its composition and the conscientious craftsmanship with which it is rendered, it is the Satan of M Feuchère, a personification, with plenty of verve and ardour, of the evil genius at odds with being powerless”.

The subject’s pose is inspired by the famous engraving of Melancholy by Albrecht Dürer (Feuchere is known to have owned a copy) and in turn is thought to have influenced Rodin’s Thinker. A number of reductions were cast in bronze measuring 10 1/2in and 13 1/2in, as was the one offered in the sale. Signed and dated Feuchere 1833, it was estimated at $800-$1,200 but sold for $16,000 ($20,480 with buyer’s premium).

CHADDS FORD, Penn. – Originally released in 1993, Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas remains an annual classic for fans of Halloween, Christmas, horror-fantasy, and of course, stop-motion animation. Directed by Henry Selick from Tim Burton’s concepts, the film tells the story of Jack Skellington, the king of Halloween Town, who discovers the adjacent Christmas Town and attempts to bring Christmas back home, with predictable results.

William Bunch Auctions recently had three lots of Nightmare Before Christmas artwork in its September 26th: Eclectic Variety Auction. Two of the lots had clear provenance from Walt Disney Studios, the producer of the film, and had been previously sold by RR Auction. Though not traditional production story boards, the pieces depicting Jack and his skeletal reindeer flying over Christmas trees and chimneys were probably produced internally for use on third-party products or books. The tree artwork sold for $2,400 ($3,120 including buyer’s premium) while the chimneys piece brought $2,200 ($2,860 including buyer’s premium).

The third Nightmare Before Christmas lot appears to be two story boards, both signed by director Henry Selick. One is of Jack and his skeletal dog Zero passing through a graveyard, and the other is of Zero with a jack-o-lantern nose. The pair sold for $1,600 ($2,080 with buyer’s premium).
