SARASOTA, Fla. – Sailing way above expectations at Sarasota Estate Auctions on August 5-6 was a diminutive English watercolor depicting the deck of a Royal Navy ship. It was dated 1805, the magical year of Nelson’s victory at the Battle of Trafalgar.

Much of the appeal of this 6-by-8in sketch lies in its subject matter. Polished scenes of British ships smashing the French and Spanish fleet off Cape Trafalgar on October 21, 1805, were painted in the thousands. Much harder to find are images of day-to-day life on deck showing officers and crew going about their daily tasks.

This watercolor gives as much prominence to the pony-tailed and shirtless sailors dubbed “Jack Tars” carrying buckets and pulling rigging as it does to the party of naval officers in full dress and a British Army redcoat. In the background is the bow of a ship at anchor flying the Cross of St George, the command flag Admiral of the White squadron in use from 1702 to 1864.

The work is dated at the lower left RN 1805 and signed indistinctly at the lower right: C. Rees Pryer. As the technique suggests a good amateur rather than a professional hand, it is possible he was a member of the crew. A circa-1980s label to the reverse suggests the picture was bought from Duncan Baggott Antiques, a once well-known dealer in the market town of Stow-on-the-Wold in the Cotswolds, for £595, which at the time would have been around $1,000.

Offered for sale in Florida with an estimate of $1,000-$1,500, it achieved $16,380.
