MONROVIA, Calif. – Moran’s June 30 quilt auction titled Blanket Statements brought to market the stellar collection of Cindy Tietze-Hodosh and Stuart Hodosh, intelligently and expertly curated over a 20-year period. One of the finest collections of Amish quilts in private hands, collectors vied for pieces from the collection that had been published in notable books and exhibited in “A Quiet Spirit,” an important exhibition at the UCLA Fowler museum in 1996. Quilts from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania achieved the highest prices of the day. A wonderful Floating Bars quilt with dreamy blue and purple colors brought $2,812. at the block (above). All prices realized include Moran’s 25% buyer’s premium.

A Nine Patch quilt with tones of blue, green, and purple was one of the more popular lots leading into the sell, bringing $1,875. A stunning Double Wedding Ring quilt with its vibrant colors caused a stir when it hit the block, selling to a determined phone bidder for $1,375 (below).

A gorgeous contained crazy quilt was the top lot of the auction, selling online for $3,125.

The Midwestern Amish quilts in the auction performed well throughout the day. A dizzying Tumbling Blocks quilt with its mix of red and blues will make a wonderful addition to the buyer’s collection, bringing $1,250 at the block.

A graphic Star of the East with its gorgeous mix of blues on a black ground (below), a quintessential feature of the Ohio Amish, brought $1,187. A delightful Roman Stripes quilt from Macomb, Illinois, with its lineup of striped triangles realized $1,675.

American quilts realized strong prices at the auction. A vibrant patchwork quilt with graphic arrangement of color caused a bidding war when it hit the block, bringing $1,250.

A Bull’s-eye quilt with a patriotic color scheme is sure to bring interest to the buyer’s collection and realized $937. An American Tobacco flag quilt was one of the most popular items leading into the sale, bringing $937 at the block.
