DETROIT, Mich. — Based in the Motor City, DuMouchelles still receives the occasional consignment from families tied to the glory days of the US automotive industry. The firm’s September 14-15 auction (Day 1, Day 2) included two Chinese jades that came by family descent from the estate of Fred and Bertha Fisher. Fred Fisher (1878-1941) and his brothers formed the Fisher Body Corporation, which later became a division of General Motors.
The two Qing or Republican era carvings both had mounts by Edward Farmer (1872-1942), the New York dealer who specialized in Chinese works of art, as well as European antiques. He is best remembered for the decorative lamps and desk accessories he fashioned from Chinese hardstone carvings and porcelains.
A 6in silver-mounted jar and cover carved in relief with a running stag and crane in a landscape was estimated at $1,000-$2,000, but sold at $10,000 ($12,900 with buyer’s premium). Another Farmer creation, a jar in a celadon and lavender stone standing 17in high on a carved giltwood mount, sold in the middle of its estimate at $15,000 ($19,350 with buyer’s premium).
From a collector in Grosse Pointe Farms came The Train, a 1904 oil on canvas by the American impressionist Theodore Earl Butler (1861-1936). He spent most of his years in Giverny — first staying at the Hotel Baudy in 1888 — and became the key link between the close-knit American Colony of expatriate artists and Claude Monet. After marrying Monet’s stepdaughter and favorite model Suzanne Hoschedé, the two painters became close friends.
This picture of a train belching smoke as it makes its way through the French countryside was done shortly after Suzanne’s premature death, when Butler turned exclusively to landscape painting. Exhibited twice at the Spanierman Gallery, New York, once at its Masters of American Impressionism show in 1991 and again at its American Painters in Giverny in 1993, the work was described as “a beautiful painting in excellent condition.” Bidders agreed, and it hammered for $27,500 ($35,475 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $12,000-$18,000.
Another popular work of American Impressionism, but this one from the 21st century, was Laurence Campbell’s Snow Storm, Ben Franklin Bridge, Philadelphia. This is a scene the Pennsylvanian artist, born in 1939, has painted on many occasions, often (as here) adding flags into the composition in memory of the September 11 attacks. Given an estimate of $8,000-$12,000 as part of a group of lots from the estate of Macomb County collector Leon Zielinski, it took $25,000 ($32,250 with buyer’s premium).
Sold at $18,000 against an estimate of $7,000-$9,000 was an early 17th century Flemish tapestry from a cycle depicting the life of the mythological Greek bard Orpheus. This 8ft by 9ft weaving was presumably the last in the series, as the scene depicts Orpheus in his final moments, playing his lyre to the animals as he is attacked by the Maenads in a moment of Dionysiac frenzy. The hunting scene in the background hints at the hero’s fate as a stag is encircled by huntsmen.
It was last sold at Sotheby’s in 1996 as part of the carpets and tapestries collection of London dealership Vigo-Sternberg and came by descent to the current owner from a private collection in Birmingham, Michigan. Lined to the reverse in linen, it had some reweaving and minor restored tears, with the colors described as balanced and evenly faded.
