SUDBURY, Mass. – The Komai family of swordmakers and armorers were among the many Japanese metalworkers courting a new clientele during the Meiji period (1868-1912). On the abolition of the samurai class, the Kyoto firm began making decorative objects, mostly for export. Under the leadership of Komai Otojiro, the company became renowned for producing works displaying the textured inlay in the gold and silver technique known as nunome-zougan.
Many such pieces were shown at international exhibitions, either by the Komai Company of Kyoto or dealers such as Ikeda Seisuke, marketing a selection of Japanese products.
The December 3 sale at Tremont Auctions included an impressive example of the nunome-zougan technique: a 6in casket with a full Komai signature to the base. Decorated with landscapes and brocade patterns, it opened to reveal three gilded drawers worked with repeated kikunogomon (chrysanthemum motifs), the mon, or emblem, used by the emperor of Japan and members of the imperial family. Meiji metalwork at its very best, it was estimated at $1,000-$1,500 but hammered for $30,000 and sold for $38,100 with buyer’s premium.

LONDON – It was around 1860 that the trained artist François Willème (1830-1905) began to experiment with photography as a way to create sculpture. Building on the work of fellow sculptor Antoine Samuel Adam-Salomon, the process he patented is considered the forerunner of today’s 3D printing.
Willème’s ‘photosculpture’ involved placing his ‘sitter’ in the center of a glass-enclosed rotunda fitted with 24 cameras, set 15 degrees apart. The images they captured observed the subject from every angle. After being converted into lantern slides and projected together onto a screen, these ‘profiles’ could be traced with a pantograph to create a model in wood veneers.
Willème obtained a patent for this process in France in 1860 and in the U.S. in 1864. His application read: “By this improved process I am enabled to produce sculpture exactly similar to the model, whether living or otherwise, with much greater rapidity, at a less cost, and by the aid of persons having no previous knowledge of the art. I may further lessen the time necessary for the sitting and produce sculpture of larger or smaller dimensions than the original, or in any other proportions desired.”
Clients at Willème’s studio near the Arc de Triomphe were offered a range of sizes of photosculpture in materials ranging from plaster and terracotta to bronze and alabaster. Prices ranged from Fr270-500 with a turnaround of just three or four days at a time when a professional sculptor might charge Fr3000 and take three or four months to complete a portrait.
For a brief moment at least, it did attract the interest of the great and the good of Second Empire France. However, faced with burdensome set-up costs and a labor-intensive process, the studio closed shortly after Willème left in 1868.
Today, most of Willème’s photosculptures reside in institutional collections. However, it is very probable one was offered at Chiswick Auctions as part of a sale of 19th and 20th Century Photographs on November 30. The 12in (33cm) high terracotta model of seated dog by the name of Carlo was inscribed to the base Photosculpture. The lot sold for £2,400 ($3,020 or $3,770 with buyer’s premium).

DANIA BEACH, Fla. – Pierre Hodé (1889-1942) learned his trade in Paris while a resident of the famous Bateau-Lavoiri building in Montmartre, where his close neighbor was Juan Gris. Living next to one of the Three Musketeers of Cubism evidently rubbed off. He was among the artists who exhibited in the Salon de la Section d’Or in 1912 at the Galerie la Boëtie and much of his future stock in trade had a Cubist tone.
Normandy was always Hodé’s favorite region to paint. This unframed 2ft by 20in oil on canvas depicts the busy port at Dieppe — a scene he painted many times. It was offered at Kodner Galleries on November 28 with what was a very appealing estimate of $200-$600. Several Hodé oils of this size, style and subject have sold for more than $10,000 in recent years, and this one joined them when it hammered for $12,000 and sold for $15,120 with buyer’s premium.

WOLCOTTVILLE, Ind. – Strawser Auction Group broke the world auction record for a piece of Fiesta ware on November 4 when it sold a unique coffee pot in the coveted medium green hue. Assigned a significant estimate of $15,000-$25,000 and described by the house as “the rarest piece of Fiesta we have sold in 30 years,” the coffee pot hammered for $44,000 and sold for $54,120 with buyer’s premium as almost 110 bidders watched the contest on LiveAuctioneers. Auction Central News prominently featured the piece in a Five Lots to Watch column.
The previous world auction record for Fiesta also belongs to Strawser, set by a pair of Fiesta tripod candle holders in vintage dark Rose Ebony glaze, which hammered for $20,000 in March 2020 against an estimate of $6,000-$9,000.
Reached via email, Strawser Auction Group President Michael Strawser spoke about the state of the Fiesta market and the aftermath of the record sale. He observed that the house has “had a couple of new serious bidders enter the market which has also had an effect,” and that the arrival of a new bidder for top-level pieces “helped push the price of the coffee pot.”
He added that he and his colleagues were “seeing a solid, consistent market for most regular pieces of Fiesta. There seems to be a little bit of an upward trend on medium green pieces. The rest of the market seems stable.”
Strawser also clarified that a piece of Fiesta boasting the medium green hue does not automatically guarantee riches at auction. “There are thousands of pieces of Fiesta in medium green, but occasionally a piece comes on to the market which was not officially produced in a particular shape,” he said. “We have sold medium green juice tumblers, water tumblers, two pint jugs, an egg cup, a marmalade and a relish tray, all of which were pieces that were not officially produced. Some publications list them as NOP, [which stands for] not officially produced. The coffee pot has been listed as ‘rumored to exist’. No one knew for sure it existed until it came out onto the market. There’s talk and opinions that they may have been made for a family member, [or] an employee dipped the pieces in medium green and other rumors and discussions.”
Strawser has since fielded multiple inquiries from excited Fiesta owners who may or may not have been moved to call after seeing the coffee pot result. For the most part, he said he has had to let them down gently: “We have had numerous calls from potential consignors who indicated they, too, had a medium green coffee pot, but it turned out they were light green.”

DUBLIN – The November 28 event at Bonhams dubbed The Irish Sale – Vision & Voice featured more than 28 works from what has become known as the Irish News collection. Formed across 40 years by the late Jim Fitzpatrick, the Belfast-based former owner of The Irish News, Ireland’s largest-selling morning newspaper, the collection included Irish art from the 19th century to the modern day. Pictured here is the best-performing lot of the collection, Portrait of Harry Clarke, tenderly painted by his wife Margaret Clarke (1888-1961). Estimated at €10,000-€15,000, it hammered for €40,000 and sold for €50,000 ($53,950) with buyer’s premium.
The couple had met as students at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art, married in 1914 and had three children together. A larger version of this 22 by 16in oil in the National Gallery of Ireland collection is dated circa 1931, the year Harry Clarke passed away. Painted posthumously, it was based on a studio photograph taken by Lafayette’s of Dublin, and an earlier portrait Margaret Clarke had made while visiting her husband in Davos, Switzerland, where he received regular treatment for tuberculosis. The background to the portrait is thought to subtly represent the stained glass for which Harry Clarke is best known.
