Silver and Objects of Vertu
The October auction carries several strong themes throughout that illuminate the world of silver and the joy of collecting and using it. The provincial assay offices of Newcastle, Exeter, Chester, and York are all represented by holloware that covers many of the forms distinct to these regions. Chester tumblers, York beakers, Exeter chocolate pots, and a broad array of Newcastle vessels including the collection of Frank Graham, who published Margaret Gill's guide to Newcastle silver in 1978. Indian silver showcases pieces from the famous names of Peter Orr, Cotha Krishniah Chetty, and Oomersi Mawji. A cased Iraqi niello tea service signed by Dakheel emerges from family ownership for the first time. A private collection of heraldic seals is offered, including that for Angela Georgina Burdett-Coutts, the illustrious philanthropic heiress, who was the wealthiest woman of the 19th century. Finally we culminate on a pair of salts by the most renowned silversmith of all Paul de Lamerie, they form an addition to the known Hasell family group of silver by de Lamerie that would have graced the rooms at Dalemain house.Bidder Reviews for Chiswick Auctions (104)
