NEW YORK (ACNI) – A powerful lineup of auctions featuring Internet bidding through LiveAuctioneers produced headline-grabbing results over the weekend. In Florida-based Affiliated Auctions’ Dec. 6 sale, an online bidder paid $122,050 (inclusive of buyer’s premium) to acquire a 10-carat diamond ring that Elvis Presley took from his hand and gave to a fan during a 1975 concert.

The unique and heavily documented piece of Elvis Presley-worn memorabilia was given to the consignor, Lloyd Perry, by the singer during a concert in Asheville, N.C. Its impressive assemblage of provenance included concert photos and tickets; a signed 1975 book referencing the onstage gift, and copies of newspapers carrying the story of the remarkable event the day after the concert.

“It’s very exciting to see an item purchased through LiveAuctioneers that represents such an iconic event in pop culture history,” said LiveAuctioneers CEO Julian R. Ellison. “Elvis Presley was known for his generosity to fans, but the ring purchased through LiveAuctioneers was special, in that it was accompanied by the most extensive, ironclad provenance any buyer could ever hope for. We’re delighted that LiveAuctioneers played a role in this transaction, and we congratulate Affiliated Auctions on a fantastic sale.”

In all, 205 lots, or 32.43 percent, of Affiliated Auctions’ event sold through LiveAuctioneers. More than 10,500 people viewed their online catalog, and 703 bidders signed up to bid via the Internet.

Strong online results were noted over the weekend in a number of high-profile sales. In Treadway’s 20th Century Art & Design sale held Dec. 6, 204 lots (17.7 percent) sold through LiveAuctioneers, with more than 11,000 people viewing their electronic catalog. A total of 108,377 page views were recorded prior to and during Treadway’s blockbuster auction. A 22-inch-high Tiffany Studios Lily lamp with six Favrile shades approached the top of its estimate range in selling online for $10,412.50.

In Rachel Davis Fine Arts’ Dec. 5-6 auction, an Internet bidder prevailed on a 19-inch-high Emmanuel Fremiet gilt-painted bronze titled Centaur and Wolf, paying $7,260. More than 1,200 absentee bids were lodged in this sale through LiveAuctioneers.com, with an online sell-through rate of 36.4 percent.

The Oakland, Calif., auction house Clars was another big winner. Their Dec. 5-6 auction sessions enjoyed an online sell-through rate of 27.58 percent, with 439 absentee bids placed through LiveAuctioneers. A framed oil-on-panel diptych titled The Annunciation and The Rest on the Flight into Egypt, from the workshop of Pieter Coecke van Aelst the Elder (Flemish, 1502-1556), was purchased by an Internet bidder for $26,620, exceeding the midpoint of the artwork’s estimate range.
