SARASOTA, Fla. – Sarasota Estate Auction‘s April 10-11 spring sale exceeded $600,000 and saw several lots perform remarkably well, including paintings that seriously outpaced their high estimates.

Among the top performers was Florida Palms, a gorgeous signed, undated Florida landscape painting by the prolific German American artist Hermann Herzog. Estimated at $30,000-$40,000, a total of 29 bids drove it to $65,000 with buyer’s premium.

March Avery, ‘Blue Tree Blue Sky,’ sold for $16,000

Also performing well was Blue Tree Blue Sky, a generously-sized undated work by March Avery, daughter of the artists Milton Avery and Sally Michel. The oil-on-canvas proves that March clearly inherited her parents’ gift for color, with its luxuriant, almost indulgent use of butter yellow and turquoise blue. Estimated at $5,000-$8,000, the painting drew 28 bids and ultimately fetched $16,000 with buyer’s premium. And an ethereal untitled landscape with a gold-colored sky by the noted 19th century American artist George Inness garnered $12,000 with buyer’s premium against an estimate of $3,000-$4,000.

Decorative arts items that turned in a good showing included a pair of Czechoslovakian Imperial gilt bronze and crystal urns, each on a solid white marble base that raised their heights to six feet in all. Both of the urns boasted glass lids with pinecone finials, dual flowing leaf handles, and garland ribbons at the bottom. Estimated at $4,000-$6,000, the pair of urns received 28 bids to sell for $10,000 with buyer’s premium. Also of note was an intricate stained glass and wooden support structure with an alluring domed ceiling mount that measured 16 by 16ft. Formerly part of an $11 million home in Longboat Key, Florida, and estimated at $5,000-$7,000, it drew 26 bids and sold for $12,000 with buyer’s premium.

Finishing the list of remarkable lots is a Louis Vuitton trunk, decorated in the French design house’s most recognizable pattern and measuring 39 1/2 by 20 1/2 by 13 1/2 in. Estimated at $8,000-$10,000, it was the object of 17 bids and finally sold for $11,000 with buyer’s premium.
