19th century Americana steps up at Kensington Estate Auction, April 11
CLINTONDALE, N.Y. – Kensington Estate Auction‘s Monday, April 11 auction will feature 180 lots of art and objets d’art including Persian rugs, antiquarian books, photographs, 19th-century Americana, Native American beaded objects, sculptures, dolls, manuscripts, British historical documents and stamp collections. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
The Americana offerings include several samplers, led by an 1860 pictorial needlework sampler decorated with a coat of arms, sailboats, people and animals, modestly estimated at $500-$800. Of great interest is a Civil War carte-de-visite photograph album that contains images of Abraham Lincoln, General Grant and General Sherman, among others. Accompanied by a certificate of authentication, this CDV album has an estimate of $500-$800.
Highlighting the auction will be an 18th- or early 19th-century unsigned European Old Master painting of a figural interior family scene, estimated at $600-$1,200. Also on offer are a 19th-century painted tole nautical coal scuttle, Heriz rugs, animal sculptures by Anna Huntington, a unique erotic hermaphrodite carving, American Plains Indian beaded artifacts and original R. Wagner drawings of the Sino-Japanese War.
Representing the works of artists and artisans from afar are a 19th-century Indian low table and chairs with a carved rosette, a large pair of early Chinese carved architectural elements, Meiji period dolls and Pop-Art counter-culture paintings by Baskakov.
Historians of British royalty will appreciate the collection of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth memorabilia as well as a 19th-century Royal Presentation Book with a fore-edge painting of Windsor Castle. Equally compelling is a selection of photographs taken by a World War II RAF Lieutenant.
Other can’t-miss lots include examples of Moorcroft porcelain, Staffordshire biscuit barrels, a Manises faience zoomorphic urn, 19th-century German KPM portrait plaques and an Art Nouveau porcelain Royal Dux Bohemia vase graced with two water nymphs shown caressing a large leaf that almost overshadows a crustacean at the base of the piece. This delicate vase carries an estimate of $500-$1,000.
