NEW YORK – Jasper52 will offer nearly 100 original works of art, many at affordable price points, in an online auction Wednesday, Nov. 28. Paintings range from Victorian landscapes to contemporary still lifes, all by listed artists. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.

Paintings of dogs were popular among Victorians and George Armfield was a prolific animal artist who lived through most of that era. Today, Armfield is regarded as one of Victorian England’s finer animal artists and his work as sought-after as it was in his own lifetime. His unsigned oil painting of a trio of terriers (above) is presented in its original custom-made wood and gesso frame and is expected to sell for $2,000-$2,500.

Another oil painting from the same period is idyllic landscape with figures by countryman Robert John Hammond (below). Though born in London in 1853, Hammond later moved to the Midlands. According to A Catalogue of Birmingham & West Midlands Painters of the 19th Century, Hammond mainly placed his romantic scenes from the middle of England. His paintings certainly never reflect the griminess of the effects of the Industrial Revolution. He painted charming cottages in idyllic situations or scenes set in the delights of a summer’s day, perhaps peopled with sublimely happy peasants out enjoying the sunshine and fresh air. The painting offered in the Jasper52 auction measures 30 inches wide by 22 inches high, including the frame. It is a traditional type of Victorian landscape done in primary earth colors and finely painted. It is signed on the canvas on the reverse and dated 1880 (est. $500-$600).

Born in Bordeaux, France, Auguste Bonheur painted animals and bucolic scenes. His compositions accurately depicted luminous settings and space. His works show the influence of the paintings of cattle by 17th-century Dutch painters. During his lifetime Bonheur’s works were compared to those of his more successful older sister, the renowned animal painter Rosa Bonheur. His oil on canvas painting titled The Summer Pasture (below) is in an ornate gilt frame (est. $6,000-$7,000).
