NEW YORK – On Wednesday, April 5, starting at 3 pm Eastern time, Jasper52 will hold a 155-lot sale of Exquisite Fine Art Paintings and Prints. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Of particular note in the sale lineup are four lots of antique portraits, two depicting royalty and two others depicting a merchant and a captain. The merchant is shown seated at a table with his hand resting on a chart of the Atlantic; the captain is depicted on shore, wearing his finest outfit, as his Royal Navy brig floats on the waters in the background. The royals are both British monarchs, and both of those paintings date to the 19th century: King Charles I is favored in a large canvas in the style of Van Dyck, and Queen Elizabeth I, in full regalia, appears in a circular oil-on-board.

It should also be mentioned that there are two lots of dog portraits in the sale as well. One is a circa-1900s head-and-neck image of a German shepherd by British artist Henry Crowther, and the other is a late 20th-century painting of a greyhound or whippet-like dog in full, against a field of tall grass and an overcast sky. It is credited to the Lurcher English School.

Highlights from the April 5 sale include an English School oil on canvas of a scene from the Battle of Trafalgar, painted in the 19th century and titled The Naval Engagement. It measures 29 by 36in and carries an estimate of $2,500-$3,000.

Equally worthy of mention, if not more so, is The Chateau Lake by French artist Josine Vignon (1922-2022). This is the sort of painting that you gaze upon and feel deep, pointed annoyance that you’ve never heard of the artist until now. The Chateau Lake is simply stunning, possessed of an expert composition and a masterful color palette. The lot notes do the work, and its artist, justice: “[Vignon] painted with a beautiful style, largely influenced by the Impressionist and Post Impressionist techniques, but adding her own distinctive style and technique to each painting. Vignon’s works carry tremendous energy and enthusiasm, often painted with very thick impasto oil creating a rich and diverse texture, as well as painting with a tremendous palette range of vibrant and joyful colors … We consider her one of the most talented and significant ‘undiscovered’ artists of her time.” The Vignon canvas is estimated at $1,500-$2,000.

Completing the highlights is a circa-1980s work attributed to the French School and bearing the title Cubist abstract composition of figures. The compelling piece measures 32 by 26in unframed and is described as being in “very good and pleasing condition.” Its estimate is $2,500-$3,000.
