Asian artworks stand out in Clars auction Aug. 9

OAKLAND, Calif. – Clars Auction Gallery’s Aug. 9 sale will feature a fine selection of Asian artwork. Highlights include a Zhang Daqian (Chang Dai-chien), Red Leaves and Bird, ink and color on paper, estimated at $15,000-$20,0000. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.

The ink in color on paper artwork (above) has strong provenance and has been featured in a variety of publications, including The Paintings and Calligraphy of Chang Dai-Chien Vol.1, page 52, published by National Museum of History, Taiwan, 1980.

Ceramics are always popular in Asian art and this auction will have several great pieces. Items featuring prominently into the sale include a boxed pair of famille rose ruby-ground medallion bowls with a DaoGuang six characters mark. The bowls are estimated at $15,000-20,000.

There will also be a Chinese blue and white lotus vase with a Qianlong mark, valued at $15,000-$20,000.

Also to be offered, is a Chinese Ge-type petal-lobed vase, expected to sell for $3,000-$5,000 as well as a Chinese Dehua seated Guanyin figure with HeChaoZong marks estimated at $15,000- $20,000, a Chinese Ge-type petal-lobed vase, $3,000-$5,000, and a Chinese purple-splashed jun dish, $2,500-3,000, each having provenance: property of Kobijutsu KenShuDo, Japanese Osaka Estate Antique Co.

Also to be offered is a fine Chinese Dehua figure of a seated Guanyin, from a local estate.

The August auction will include of rare Southeast Asia pieces with strong provenance including a 40½-inch-tall sandstone torso of Vishnu, India, 10th-11th century estimated at $12,000-$16,000.

There will be several major American artists included in the Aug. 9 sale. Paintings to be offered include Emile Gruppe (American, 1896-1978), Morning Light at East Gloucester, (est. $10,000-$15,000), an Anthony Thieme (American, 1888-1954), Nassau Boats, oil on canvas ($10,000-15,000), a William Holbrook Beard (American, 1824-1900), Anthropomorphized Monkeys on the Beach, 1889, oil on canvas ($20,000-$30,000), and a Wayne Thiebaud (American, b. 1920), Untitled (Study – Beach Scene with House), 1960, watercolor and gouache (grisaille) ($25,000-$30,000).

The Fine Jewelry and Timepieces Department at Clars Auction Gallery will offer a wide selection of diamond, colored stone and gold jewelry in the August sale. Highlighted is a 3-carat natural fancy light yellow diamond and 18K white and yellow gold ring, accompanied by a GIA certificate with an estimate of $15,000-$17,000. Also listed is an elegant Cartier 18K yellow gold necklace, accompanied with a red leather envelope estimated at $13,000-15,000.
