NEW YORK – On Wednesday, December 28, starting at noon Eastern time, Jasper52 will conduct a sale titled Fossilized Ammonites, Trilobites, and More. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
The lineup of the December 28 auction is tightly curated, offering just 80 lots, but all are stellar. Among them are a finely polished Manticoceras ammonoid with delicate marbled colors; a gorgeous self-standing polished labradorite that sports generous splashes of deep blue and toasted pearlescent white and weighs more than three and a half pounds; a natural iron pyrite cluster in the form of three highly decorative cubes; a sphere of ocean jasper, nearly four inches in diameter, graced with whorls and splotches of golden yellow, creamsicle orange and burnt sienna against an overcast white background; and a three-inch tooth from a Carcharodontosaurus saharicus dinosaur, which American palaeontologist Paul Sereno describes as “Africa’s answer to Tyrannosaurus.”
Also featured is a pair of specimens, a Dicranurus monstrosus and a Cheirurus (Crotalocephalina) gr. gibbus, presented on a slab of rock; a specimen of emerald crystals on a calcite matrix from Cosquez, Colombia; an exceptional celestite geode; a calcite scalenohedron from Morocco; two vanadinite crystal clusters, offered as separate lots; and a highly detailed bone from a Mastodonsaurus, a marine reptile.
First among the highlights is a specimen of deep green fluorite crystals on a matrix, which weighs slightly more than 20 pounds and is estimated at $2,000-$2,500. The lot notes state that the crystals’ color changes to purplish-blue under UV light or sunlight.
Also worthy of attention is a spiny trilobite, species erbenochile erbeni, dating to the Devonian period and found in Morocco. The lot notes describe it as “a rare and much sought after trilobite. This specimen is excellent in every way and has been prepared to reveal its outstanding and thin ornamentation. ” It is estimated at $3,500-$4,000.
The third and final highlight is a giant ammonite, species lobolytoceras costellatum, which measures almost 23 inches long and weighs more than 116 pounds. According to the lot notes, it is “huge and heavy! It was polished to reveal the superb suture lines and make it a museum-display specimen. The ammonite is beautiful on both sides.” Its estimate is $8,000-$10,000.
