ASHBURN, Va. – Oakridge Auction Gallery will present its Winter Fine Asian Art & Antiques Auction, Nov. 14-15 beginning at 10 a.m. both days. The auction consists of two sessions: ceramics and works of art on Nov. 14 and Chinese snuff bottles on Nov. 15. Bid absentee or live online through LiveAuctioneers.

Session 1: Ceramics and Works of Art offers over 300 lots of fine jade carvings, porcelain, metalwork, and textiles. Among the featured lots is a jade table screen with a carved zitan wood base dating to the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty. The plaque is carved on one side in low relief with chrysanthemums over stones, while the other side is inscribed with a poem by the scholar and Qing minister He Ning with a title granted by the Emperor Jiaqing. It is estimated at $6,000-$10,000.

Another piece of both historical and artistic significance is Lot 152, a Chinese copper red “Three Fish” stem bowl. A trio of bright red fish stand out against the white porcelain ground in a pattern that demonstrates the Qing artisans’ explorations of Ming dynasty techniques and visual vocabulary. The Three Fish pattern is believed to have originated under the Xuande emperor of the Ming Dynasty. It was revived in the sixth year of the Yongzheng emperor’s reign, and Qing artists then reinterpreted the pattern according to the tastes of the Qing court. Formerly in the collection of Dr. Sidney Dillon Ripley (1913-2001), who served as secretary of the Smithsonian Institution from 1964-1984, the stem cup is estimated at $1,500-$2,500.

Session 2: Chinese snuff bottles showcases the skill of Chinese craftsmen in giving shape to a rich array of materials, including jade, jadeite, glass, agate, amber and cloisonne. Lots 442 through 484 come from a single private collection belonging to a Connecticut man, assembled over the past 25 years.

The artworks in this auction have been assembled from collections across North America, and Oakridge is pleased to continue to feature works from the collection of John Calvin Ferguson, Kwok Woon Kun and many more who lived and collected in China and Taiwan throughout the 1930s-1980s, before bringing their collections to the United States.
