Clars auction loaded with big-name items, June 11-12

OAKLAND, Calif. – Each month, Clars Auction Gallery continues to raise the bar in their art, antiques and decorative offerings. In May, it was Kandinsky and Puthuff that were among the headliners. This month, is will be no less than works from Pablo Picasso, John Tunnard, Russell Dale Moffett and George Nakashima that will make this sale one to watch. Clars June sale will be held Saturday and Sunday, June 11 and 12.

Turning first to the art offerings, the 1933 etching by Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973) entitled Seated Model and Sculptor Studying Sculptured Head (Vollard Suite) was done during his most productive period, the 1920s and early ’30s. This work is estimated to achieve $20,000 to $40,000.

A number of works from very notable European artists will complement this offering. Centaur, a bronze sculpture from Ernst Neizsvestny (Russian, b. 1925) will draw international bidding (estimate $7,000 to $9,000), as will the gouache, ink and pastel from John Tunnard (British, 1900-1971) entitled Entymologist’s Eye, (estimate: $20,000 to $40,000). Rounding out this strong category will be works by French artists Claude Venard, Emile Lambinet and Bernard Lorjou.

Turning to offerings from American painters will be an impressive maritime oil on masonite by Frank Vining Smith (1879-1967) entitled Gathering Squall estimated to achieve $10,000 to $20,000. Karl Albert (Californian, 1911-2007) will be represented with his oil on canvas board Cowboys at Dusk and Russell Dale Moffett, (Californian, 1899-1984) known for his murals and paintings depicting the Hawaiian Islands and South Seas will be represented by hi double-sided oils on canvas entitled Pin Ups in Polynesia. This work expected to earn $15,000 to $25,000.

A look to the equally impressive decoratives and furnishings category finds work from Nakashima, Galle and Gladding McBean. From McBean, will be a circa 1907 terra-cotta architectural element from the San Francisco Sherman Clay Building, one of four to be offered. A selection of furniture from George Nakashima will be offered with the highlight being a walnut trestle dining table and chairs, which have an estimate of $10,000 to $15,000. From Emile Galle, will be a group of Art Nouveau nesting tables and the Mid-Century offerings will include works by Dunbar, Philippe Starck and Paul McCobb.

The decoratives category will feature a number of important makers including an elegant Tiffany Studios candlestick (estimate: $1,500 to $2,500) having Favrile cabachon reserves and important sterling offerings from Shreve and Co. as well as Russian and British silver manufacturers. Works by Sevres, and art glass by Gallé and Loetz will round out this category.

The Asian category, which seems to surpass itself month after month, will be highlighted by an ink and color on paper entitled Landscape of Jialing attributed to Li Keran (Chinese, 1907-1989). A large Chinese ivory carved tusk will be offered with a landscape scene (Republic period) as will a carved Chinese celadon jade plaque from the Qing Dynasty. A pair of Chinese panels with polychrome enameled porcelain landscape plaques from the late Qing dynasty is signed “Cheng Men” or “Li doaren” (Cheng Men, 1833-1908).

There will also be historic and memorabilia collections offered including a selection of signed San Francisco sports memorabilia, a collection of signed poems, prose and documents from Albert Einstein, Helen Keller, Robert Frost, Aldous Huxley, Ezra Pound, Carl Sandburg, Philip Larkin and Franklin Roosevelt (estimate: $10,000 to $15,000) and a collection of historic signed documents from Louis XV, Louis XVI and Louis Philippe, all relating to the French Revolution.

Clars June Fine Art and Antiques Sale will be held on will be held Saturday, June 11, beginning at 9:30 a.m, Pacific and Sunday June 12, at 10 a.m. Previews will be Friday, June 10, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and 9 a.m. each auction day and by special appointment.
