The two-day event features historic property from estates and collections in California, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Texas, Connecticut, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Ohio, plus museum deaccessions.
Day One, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Eastern time on Friday, June 26, will kick the weekend off with a special single-owner session of a fine upstate New York private collection. The diverse offerings, assembled over the past 50 years, include a wide range of American furniture, fraktur, folk and fine art, Shaker material, pottery, textiles, advertising and country store, toys, early ceramics, plus much more. Noteworthy items include a fine labeled Ernst Vogt (Philadelphia) Regulation Infantry rope-tension snare drum (above); a Western Apache basket with pictorial decoration; a “Votes for Women” parade sash; a diminutive Shaker contrasting-wood berry pail, probably made at Mount Lebanon, N.Y.; and a Prior-Hamblin portrait of a man, ex-Chrysler Collection.
Day One will include additional offerings of folk pottery, Native American material, baskets, metals and country accessories.
Day Two, beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 27, will feature property from the private collection of Dr. James and Sheri Swinehart, Cincinnati, Ohio; the Russell and Doris Evitt estate collection, Jackson, Calif.; the private collection of Margie and Gordon Barlow, Augusta County, Va.; the collection of Lynne and the late Philip Blaker, Austin, Texas; the collection of Theodore and the late Alvina Breckel, Oley, Pa., and Winnetka, Ill.; selections from the estate of Buryl and Nelwyn Kay, McLean, Va.; property deaccessioned by the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, Mount Vernon, Va.; and property deaccessioned by the Valentine Museum, Richmond, Va.; plus many others.
The day’s offerings include a fine selection of rare Virginia and other Southern material; 18th-19th century formal and country furniture; American folk, fine and decorative arts; textiles including samplers and other needlework, outstanding quilts; Shenandoah Valley and other long rifles; additional 17th-19th century firearms, edge weapons, and accoutrements; 19th century coin silver; early ceramics including American historical transfer-printed Staffordshire; pieces by contemporary artists including John Heatwole and John Wesley Chumley; plus more.
Noteworthy objects include an important group of eight newly discovered Brock Family (Madison County, Va.) folk art watercolor profile portraits (circa 1810), descended directly in the family; an important George Henry Burgess (British-American, 1831-1905) watercolor view of San Francisco, dated 1869; a Thomas Hill (British-American, 1829-1908) oil on canvas Yosemite view of impressive size, featuring Half Dome and the Merced River at twilight; a fine Vorhees rig Canada goose standing field decoy with cast-iron head and excellent original surface; a rare Mary Cassatt (American, 1844-1926) Reflection drypoint, pencil signed; a James Peale (American, 1749-1831) miniature portrait of a girl, signed and dated 1791; an 18th-century Boston “Fishing Lady” needlework picture; a John Fisher (York, Pa.) carved cherry tall-case clock, one of six from the Swinehart Collection; and much more.
