NEW ORLEANS – A portrait painting of George Washington done in the manner of Edward Savage, an oil painting titled Native American Bow Hunting by H. Irving Marlatt and an American Rococo carved mahogany half tester bed, circa 1850-1860, stamped “C. Lee” are star lots in Crescent City Auction Gallery’s March 24 and 25 sale. Offered will be more than 1,000 quality lots, headlined by the estate of John “Peter” Eaves, plus numerous other prominent local and Southern estates. The Saturday, March 24, session will begin at 9 a.m. Central time and on Sunday at 10 a.m.
Featured will be period American, French and English furniture, original artwork (to include paintings by New Orleans and other regional artists), a selection of Russian icons (including The Virgin of Kazan and The Virgin of Tikhvin), silver, a wide array of jewelry (to include diamonds, rubies, sapphires, tanzanites, emeralds, alexandrite and South Seas pearls), bric-a-brac and more.
The American Indian-themed work (above) by H. Irving Marlatt (American, 1860-1925) is an oil on canvas, signed and dated “1915” lower right, and measures 37 ½ inches by 27 ½ inches (est. $1,500-$2,500).
The late 18th- or early 19th-century portrait of George Washington painted in the manner of Edward Savage (American, 1761-1817) is a beautiful oil on canvas rendering that measures 25 inches by 20 inches (est. $3,000-$5,000).
The mid-19th-century American Rococo carved mahogany half tester bed (below) stamped “C. Lee” is magnificent, at 110 inches tall, 66 inches wide and 75 ½ inches deep (est. $2,000-$4,000).

Crescent City Auction Gallery imageLots expected to attract keen bidder interest are a lovely and superb Liverpool creamware pitcher, circa 1795-1818, just 6 ½ inches in height (est. $1,000-$2,000); a 19th-century Sevres-style porcelain and bronze six-light chandelier (below) , 30 inches tall (est. $600-$1,200); and a gorgeous early 20th-century Turkish Oushak rug, 12 feet 9 inches by 16 feet 2 inches (est. $2,000-$3,000).
Original artwork by New Orleans and regional Southern artists will be led by an oil on canvas marine painting by John Kover (Baton Rouge, La., 1910-1988), titled Schooner in Rough Seas, artist signed (est. $2,500-$4,500); and a 1989 oil on canvas by Martin Laborde (New Orleans, b. 1943), titled I Held Her as She Thought of the White Cloud of Levitation (est. $1,000-$2,000).
The category continues with a 20th-century mixed media artwork by George Valentine Dureau (New Orleans, 1930-2014), titled Nude Afro-American Man, signed lower center and 39 inches by 30 ¼ inches (est. $600-$900). Also sold will be an American School oil on canvas titled The Paddlewheeler Utica (below), possibly done by Samuel Stanton (N.Y., 1870-1912) (est. $800-$1,200).
Fine period French furniture – a staple at most Crescent City estate auctions – will include a circa 1800 French provincial Louis XV-style inlaid oak armoire, handsome and stately at 87 inches tall by 70 inches wide (est. $1,500-$2,500); and a Louis XV-style carved cherry and elm sideboard, also made around 1800, 40 ½ inches tall by 62 ½ inches wide (est. $1,000-$1,500).
American furniture will feature a pair of lots with identical estimates of $800-$1,200. The first is an American Rococo Revival carved walnut marble-top console table from the mid-19th century, attributed to the renowned cabinetmaker Thomas Brooks. The second is an American Federal carved mahogany ormolu mounted marble-top library table, crafted around the early 19th century.
Decorative accessories will be led by a pair of 19th-century Royal Vienna chargers, titled Mars and Venus and The Temptation, each one 12 ½ inches in diameter (est. $1,500-$2,500); and two large American carved gilt and gesso wood eagles, crafted in the 19th century, one 36 inches tall by 23 inches wide and the other 33 inches tall by 20 inches wide (each one est. $1,000-$2,000).
