NEW YORK – On Thursday, March 9, starting at 6 pm Eastern time, Jasper52 will hold its next sale of Americana, Folk Art, and Outsider Art. As always, the auction is curated by Clifford Wallach, an expert in tramp art, folk art and Americana. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

A Jasper52 Americana, Folk Art, and Outsider Art sale worthy of the name always includes antique needlework samplers, and the March 9 auction is no exception. A standout silk-on-linen example from 1826 by Mary Florence of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, carries an estimate of $4,500-$5,500. Featuring a large house resting on a lawn covered with flowers and animals, it also has a two-stanza verse at its top that reads: ‘Lord this I ask in faith sincere / The wisdom from above / To touch my heart with filial fear / And pure celestial love / My selfish will in time subdue / And mortify my pride / And lend my youth a sacred clue / To find the crucified.’

Leading the selection of quilts is a circa-1930s-1940s sampler quilt from Ohio that has an estimate of $1,500-$2,000. Measuring 88 by 108in, the lot notes describe it as “outstanding” and go on to say it is “all hand pieced and hand quilted, with 48 detailed blocks, each representing a different state, and hand embroidered accents. One block has over 160 pieces. There is quilting around and within the piecework and in straight line, cable, and other designs in the background, all at seven stitches to the inch.”

Completing the highlights is an undated wood carving of an American Robin by folk artist Frank Finney of Cape Charles, Virginia. Depicted with a pert black tail with spread feathers, a red belly and its beak open in song, it is described as sporting “superior life-like paint, surface and patina.” Its estimate is $3,250-$3,800.
