NEW YORK – On Tuesday, July 18, starting at 7 pm Eastern time, Jasper52 will present a sale of 15th-19th Century Antique Books, containing almost 600 lots. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Sales such as these are typically brimming with religious works, but the July 18 sale happens to have a strong offering of science and technology titles also. These include a 1702 illustrated naval dictionary that lists French explanations paired with their Dutch equivalents; a Latin-language 1573 book on the weights and measures used by the Romans and Greeks; a two-volume illustrated French first edition of Jacques Dalechamps’s history of plants, published in 1615; a Dutch-language treatise on algebra from 1747 by Symon Panser; a 1684 Latin text by Gabriel Clauder on the history of alchemical uses and applications of Hungarian cinnabar; and a 1524 second edition, in Latin, on astrolabes by German mathematician and astronomer Johannes Stoeffler.

Also demanding mention is a circa-1839-1840 Samuel Lewis map of England and Wales in four sheets; an Italian-language tome on the Hundred Most Beautiful Drawings by Leonardo da Vinci; a six-volume folio from 1890 on The Complete Works of William Hogarth; an 1881 German edition of Picturesque Palestine, a two-volume offering with three color maps and more than 500 illustrations; an 1857 five-volume set of John Ruskin’s Modern Painters, bound in the original gilt decorated red morocco; and John Earheart’s The Color Printer, an 1892 book on the use of colors in typographic printing, its presentation page signed by the author.

The trio of highlights all reference religious themes in some way, two of which are incunabula. They are led by a 1492 three-volume collection of the works of St. Ambrose, printed in Basel, Switzerland and boasting a woodcut by the Meister des Haintz Narr depicting the saint writing in his study. It carries an estimate of $11,000-$13,000.

Equally of interest is a Dutch-text Bible printed in 1719 that features four maps by Daniel Stoopendaal. The book is bound in blind-stamped leather over the wooden panel with massive brass corners, and having clasps in working condition. Its estimate is $1,000-$1,200.

Completing the highlights is Summa angelica de casibus conscientiae, a Latin-text work printed in Venice in 1492. Described as a popular lexical-alphabetical manual for confessors, the lot notes state that it was “published in many editions between 1476 and 1520 and burned by Luther in 1520 as more than devilish.” It has an estimate of $3,500-$4,000.
