NEW YORK – On Thursday, January 27, starting at 6 pm Eastern time, Jasper52 will conduct an auction of Americana: Quilts and Textiles. Its 172 lots have been curated by the unimpeachable Clifford Wallach, an expert in tramp art, folk art and Americana. Selections include an 1850s whig rose quilt with a vine border; Amish quilts, including one with a Baskets of Chips pattern and also a matched pair with a 1932-1933 date; several schoolgirl needlework samplers; hooked rugs; a 1930s quilt with a stunning graphic of a sunburst; an 1860s goose tracks pattern quilt; an 1890s quilt with a drunkard’s path pattern; an 1850s red and green quilt; an 1870s medallion sampler quilt; a 1940s Star of Bethlehem quilt; and a mid-century modern kaleidoscope quilt, among many others. Leading the highlights is an 1850s cotton whig rose quilt with a vine border, which emerged from Erie County, New York. The generously sized quilt measures 92in by 102in and is described as being in “excellent condition, with the occasional spot, light surface dirt and no wear. The quilt feels strong and sturdy overall, with vibrant color, no bleed, and no holes or fade.” It is estimated at $1,500-$2,000.

Lacking a date but not much else is a handsome Amish wool and cotton quilt sporting a Baskets of Chips pattern. It is estimated at $3,500-$4,000. The lot notes state that the 66in by 72in quilt is in “mint, unused, unwashed condition.”

The third and final highlight of the January 27 Americana: Quilts and Textiles auction is an 1850s applique red and green quilt breathlessly described as “fabulous.” It measures 90in by 90in and features piping around the edge. According to the lot notes, it is in “very excellent condition, with a couple of ‘age spots.’ This has been used and washed very little if at all.” It carries an estimate of $3,000-$3,500.
