Japanese landscapes and society captured in woodblock prints offered Aug. 28

NEW YORK – Japanese woodblock prints are beloved for their sensitive portrayals of nature, temples, and polite society of times past. However they also can embody drama in the form of mythical beasts, warfare, and one-on-one sword battles. Some who collect Japanese woodblock prints favor particular artists, while others take a more comprehensive approach. Either type of collector will find a treasure in Jasper52’s Wednesday, August 28 specialty auction, with a lineup of artists that includes Hirano Hakuho, Kawase Hasui, Kuniyoshi Utagawa and many other revered names. Absentee and online bidding will be available exclusively through LiveAuctioneers.

Let’s take a look at a few highlights that show the diversity of this sale.

A traditional circa-1910 depiction of a woman in a tranquil garden, shown below, was created by Takeuchi Keishu (1861-1943). It carries the Keishu seal and measures 21.8 by 29 cm. It exhibits fine color and condition and has a protective backing. The Jasper52 expert who curated the auction expects it to sell for $120-$150 — certainly a modest price for such an exquisite artwork.

A serene waterscape, Kawase Hasui’s Hichiri Beach 1930, shown below, depicts a couple in traditional Japanese dress taking a moonlit stroll at Soshu, with their dog in tow. The print was published by Watanabe and measures 15 1/4 by 10 1/4 inches. It is in excellent condition and carries a pre-sale estimate of $1,200-$1,500.
