NEW YORK – Prints might be the perfect medium for launching an art-collecting career. Seemingly countless beautiful and compelling works by well-known artists are available in this two-dimensional form; the variety of choices can be startling in its breadth and scope. On Wednesday, November 3, starting at 7 pm Eastern time, Jasper52 will conduct a sale of Original Modern Art Lithographs and Etchings in New York. The 67-lot sale features many works by 20th century Pop Art legend Andy Warhol (American, 1928-1987) as well as creations by the peerless master of multiple media, Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973); Alexander Calder (American, 1898-1976), who possessed an almost wizardly command of color; contemporary French artist Michel Delacroix (b. 1933-), whose work focuses on street scenes of Paris; and the beguiling contemporary Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama (b. 1929-). Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
Silkscreens by Andy Warhol remain popular and are only growing more popular. His fascination with mass production made prints and multiples a natural fit for him and his artistic ethos. Two highlights of Jasper52 auction are credited to him.
The first is his Campbell’s Soup Series II, published by Sunday B. Morning, a group of 10 that collectively carry an estimate of $3,000-$3,500. Warhol always had a soft spot for the Campbell’s cans, saying of the tomato soup in particular, “I used to drink it. I used to have the same lunch every day, for 20 years, I guess, the same thing over and over again.” His work endures because while it reflects the graphics of the world we live in, it also captures its beauty, and, through placing different flavors of soup next to each other, he amplifies the comfort that can come with repetition of the familiar.
The other highlighted Warhol work is his Marilyn Monroe Suite, another set of 10 that is also printed by Sunday B. Morning and estimated at $3,000-$3,500. It might be the finest example of Warhol’s long-term obsession with celebrity and the power of pop culture; then as now, Marilyn Monroe outshines many of the stars in Hollywood’s firmament.
Rounding out the highlights is Alexander Calder’s Braniff Airlines Flying Colors Suite from 1974, estimated at $4,000–$5,000. The set of five limited edition lithographs show how much power and magic Calder could summon from a simple, almost primitive palette of black, red, yellow, and blue.
