NEW YORK – An exquisite Navajo rug, a charming mid-century American flag quilt, and an American copper setter dog-form weathervane will battle for top lot status at Jasper52’s Special Thanksgiving Americana Day 1 auction, which will be held on Thursday, November 24 – yes, Thanksgiving day – starting at 6 pm Eastern time. As is true for virtually every Americana auction offered through Jasper52, the sale is curated by Clifford Wallach, an expert in tramp art, folk art and Americana. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Also appearing in the 530-lot sale are needlework samplers, led by an 1825 example stitched in Goffstown, New Hampshire; a cast iron door-knocker featuring the image of a cat scratching at the door; a Frank Finney wood carving of a loon; tramp art boxes; stoneware jugs; a cast iron windmill weight in the shape of a rooster; several concert posters, including an original 1970 first printing touting a Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention show at Pepperland, a small venue near San Francisco; and a birdhouse by Outsider artist Benny Carter, painted to look like a bird motel.

The Jasper52 Americana sale comports with a great Thanksgiving retail tradition: seemingly minutes after the dinner table is cleared, the Christmas stuff comes out. Holiday-themed pieces in the lineup include a circa-1930s cast metal figure of Santa Claus on skis; a circa-1950s spun cotton snowman decoration; a petite wood and metal sled; a ceramic mug from Japan depicting the smiling face of Santa, his red cap forming the handle; a pair of bottle brush Christmas trees that each stand five inches tall; and a mid-20th-century sign that reads, “Santa’s Candycane Cupboard.”

Returning to the aforementioned highlights, the Navajo rug dates to the 1930s and features a large storm pattern rendered in grayish brown, red and white. The lot notes declare it “A beautiful even natural brown field and red on white Greek key border. A dynamic, large rug in excellent no apologies condition.” It is estimated at $2,600-$3,000.

Another distinguished textile on offer is a circa-1940s or -1950s cotton quilt with an American flag motif. It came out of Pecatonica, Illinois, and it measures 64 by 72in. It has an estimate of $1,500-$2,000.

The final highlight is a mid-20th-century American copper weathervane of a setter dog, described as being in “very good condition with no repairs” and having a “good old weathered surface.” It measures 28in long and carries an estimate of $2,000-$2,500.
