NEW YORK – On Thursday, May 4, starting at 6 pm Eastern time, Jasper52 will offer a sale of Americana, Folk Art, and Outsider Art. As always, the auction is curated by Clifford Wallach, an expert in tramp art, folk art and Americana. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

The 484-lot sale truly has something for everyone, including a shorebird decoy carving by Frank Finney; a circa-1920 folding bandstand, painted black and emblazoned with the words RYTHM KINGS; at least four pieces of art glass by Michael Mortara; a blue porcelain letter holder by Rookwood, dating to roughly 1956; numerous Staffordshire figures; and a wooden postcard, made in the midwest in the 1930s or 1940s, with a linework image of a pouting, seated woman next to the phrase ‘Everything I like is IMMORAL, ILLEGAL, OR FATTENING!’

Also on offer is a painted wooden barber pole, 94in tall, made in the mid- to late 20th century; a 1920s cast-iron black cat doorstop; an antique brass mortar and pestle with an amazing patina; a cast-aluminum dog-form nut cracker on a wooden base, the dog figure painted black with white spots; a ceramic bank in the shape of an orange; three early 1990s signed Ned Foltz redware plates, offered as individual lots; and a complete Dick Tracy Super Detective Mystery card game, dating to 1941.

The sale lineup includes several curious and amusing vintage signs, including an early 20th-century iron example with the words ENTER REAR painted in orange on a dark red background; an early 20th-century wooden sign from an orchard that simply says WEALTHY; and two attractive signs made around 1950 made for a donut shop in Michigan. The first, which has a mint or teal green background, promises ‘A TREAT instead of a Treatment,’ and the second, on a butter yellow background, implores the viewer to ‘TAKE SOME HOME OR TO WORK O.K.?’ Both feature what is described as a “zippy” font, both are offered as separate lots, and both carry individual estimates of $500-$600.

Also earning highlight status is a cast-iron doorstop that takes the form of a pheasant, estimated at $1,000-$1,250. Described as “oversized” and having “incredible lifelike color,” the doorstop, which dates to the 1920s or 1930s, measures 16in tall and weighs six pounds, four ounces.

Completing the highlights is a representative of a category that no Jasper52 sale of this type can do without: antique quilts. Chosen for singling out among the many such quilts in the lineup is a circa-1850 all-cotton quilt found in Ohio and sporting what’s known as a Pot of Flowers pattern. It measures 90 by 90in and the lot notes declare it “superb,” “fantastic,” and “in very excellent condition.” It has an estimate of $4,000-$5,000.
