NEW YORK – On Sunday, November 14, starting at 2 pm Eastern time, Jasper52 will host a sale of Vintage Psychedelic Rock n Roll posters. The 237-lot lineup spans the 1960s to the present, and includes selections such as a 1966 Chet Helms and Wes Wilson lithograph design for a King Kong Memorial Dance; a 1967 poster published by Bill Graham touting a San Francisco appearance by the Byrds, Electric Flag, and B.B. King; a 1969 black-and-white Rolling Stones concert poster; a 1970 lithograph advertising a double bill of Elton John and the Kinks; a poster for a 1969 show at the Fillmore West with Santana as the main act; and a 1999 poster for a Counting Crows performance in San Francisco presented by Bill Graham. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

First up is a 1966 lithograph dubbed the King Kong poster for its prominent use of an image of a gorilla. It was designed by Chet Helms and Wes Wilson for Family Dog, the outfit that presented the February 1966 show, which featured the Grass Roots, Big Brother and the Holding Company and Quick Silver Messenger Service. The lot notes state “This poster is extremely rare and it is believed that the press run was well under 500 pieces. Very few survive today, making it one of the most expensive of the Family Dog series.” It is estimated at $75-$150.

Next is a 1999 lithograph poster designed by Craig Howell for a Counting Crows show at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco. The name of rock impresario Bill Graham appears on the poster and he is credited as the publisher though he wasn’t alive to see it; he died in a helicopter crash in 1991. The Counting Crows poster is estimated at $35-$70.

Also published by Bill Graham is a 1970 poster for a show featuring Elton John and the Kinks at the Fillmore West. The elegantly spare image repeats the head and arm of Michelangelo’s famous sculpture, David, as if it is a playing card, with a diamond pictured where the card suit symbol would go. The Elton John / Kinks poster is estimated at $125-$250.
