NEW YORK – The realms of Americana, Folk Art, and Outsider Art covers a startlingly wide range of objects and artifacts. Source materials range from silver, ceramics, cloth, glass, brass, iron, cardboard, wood, tin, paper, and stone. Items that can qualify include board games, trade signs, wind-up toys, fireplace tools, paintings, prints, drawings, carvings, pitchers, plates, paperweights, carnival targets, alphabet blocks, coverlets, candlesticks, vases, plates, flags, trophies, tankards, canes, and frames, to name just a scant few.
On July 8, starting at 6 pm Eastern time, Jasper52 will stage a sale of Americana, Folk Art, and Outsider Art – 554 lots covering every material and object named above, and more. As always, the sale is curated by Clifford Wallach, an expert in tramp art, folk art, and Americana. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
Needlework samplers have seemingly never lost their power. With the rise in appreciation for art by women, their power is only bound to grow. One of the offerings in the auction is a silk on linen sampler rendered in 1813 by Elizabeth Conard, a resident of the mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Among the painstakingly hand-stitched flowers and stems Conard sewed the following verse: O may the everlasting truth / My staff and standard be / The best companion for a youth / joined with humility. Her early 19th century needlework sampler carries an estimate of $3,500-$4,500.
Also of note is a circa-1760 Dutch delft oval plaque with a raised self-framed polychrome scroll and flower border. Pictured front and center is an amorous young couple outdoors in a winter setting, with a nearly leafless tree behind them and a fire blazing before them. It is estimated at $5,000-$6,000.
The last highlight is a winsome all-cotton appliqued quilt created between 1860 and 1870 by an unknown maker. Found in Ohio, it measures 89 by 75 inches and is described as being in “very excellent condition.” It is estimated at $2,000-$2,500.
