DORSET, England, U.K. – Onslows Auctioneers will hold its spring auction of vintage posters on May 28. The 312-lot sale includes many new and wonderful discoveries. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Leading the lots is a group of posters relating to the U.K.’s Western Islands and Skye, collected by their late owner during the last 40 years. The choices include a striking William Douglas Macleod quad design for The Coolins, estimated at £800-£1,200.

Also appearing in the lineup is a selection of early London Electric Railway posters from around 1915, which were discovered rolled up in old canvas in the stock of a long-closed antiques shop on Merseyside. Lurking within the stash were three posters by the anglicized American artist Edward McKnight Kauffer, and the best of the three depicts a Japanese-style bridge on the river Colne at Watford. That poster is estimated at £1,500-£2,500.

A collector in Dundee was fortunate to have hung onto a valuable poster that he forgot he had rolled up and tucked into a drawer – none other than the A. M. Cassandre’s classic and highly sought-after image for the French ocean liner Normandie. The poster is in untouched original condition and is estimated at £6,000-£8,000.

Terence Cuneo, ‘Scotland For Your Holidays,’ estimated at £5,000-£7,000

Terence Cuneo’s posters have appeared at auction regularly, but his wonderfully technical Forth Bridge design has been scarce. Onslows will offer one in its May 28 auction. The artist had to harness himself to the bridge when he created the preparatory sketches for the painting that provides the basis for the poster, which is estimated at £5,000-£7,000.

Forerunner to Alfred Leete’s famous WWI recruiting poster, estimated at £2,000-£4,000

Onslows built its reputation by achieving extraordinary prices for posters, such as the £27,500 paid in 2014 for the iconic World War I poster by Alfred Leete, Britons Lord Kitchener Wants You. Until now, experts at the auction house had never seen or heard of the existence of the forerunner that spawned that famous and influential poster – the 1914 London Opinion News Stand poster which represents the first time the Leete image of Lord Kitchener was used to advertise the weekly magazine. It was quickly commandeered by the Government Recruiting committee for use as an official recruitment advertisement. This supreme rarity turned up in a superb private collection of WWI posters, and is estimated at £2,000-£4,000.

Fortunino Matania, ‘Southport (The Lido),’ estimated at £7,000-£10,000

Also included in the sale lineup are a selection of early French motors, the most unusual being Michelin’s large design for continental tires, estimated at £7,000-£10,000. The British Railways offerings feature the most coveted of the beach posters, namely Matania’s 1930s art deco poster of the Lido at Southport, estimated at £7,000-£10,000.

The current rate of exchange between the British pound (GBP) and the U.S. dollar is 1 = $1.39.
