Kensington Estate Auction musters eclectic lineup for May 22 sale

CLINTONDALE, N.Y. – Kensington Estate Auction‘s Monday, May 22 on-line auction will be well-rounded and truly tempting. Categories represented include fine art, ethnographic art and items, urban and graffiti art, sterling silver, gold, studio pottery, photography, sculptures, antiquities, jewelry, coins and antiquarian and post-modern books. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Sterling silver offerings include an intricately engraved antique Persian sterling silver set with ewer, goblets and tray that carries a modest estimate of $600-$1,200. It boasts makers marks for Vaspour, a silversmith from Persia. Other silver choices in the lineup are the work of Tiffany & Co., Georg Jensen, Tuttle and Durham. There will also be Danish sterling and jewelry from Georg Jensen and Theodor Fahrmer.

Lawrence W. Lee’s Coyote Song, a 1990 acrylic on canvas that has an estimate of $1,000-$3,000, highlights works in the May 22 auction that depict Native Americans. Other artists who contribute pieces with this theme are Mark Rohrig (War Paint) and Greg Singley (Warrior).

Erte was a versatile and creative artist whose costume designs set the tone of the 1920s. The lineup contains two 1918 Erte gouache costume designs for the production of Les Rais des Legendes, presented as individual lots. Each is estimated at $1,000-$2,000.

Other choice pieces included in the May 22 sale are political satire comic strips by A.W. Mackenzie, graphic figural drawings by Pele de Lappe, and several limited-edition photographic works by George Hurrell and Volkmar Kurt Wentzel. Standouts among the studio art offerings include a 1890 Max Laeuger vase, and from Otto and Vivika Heino, a vase dubbed Bird Head.

The auction is replete with a single-owner collection of Andy Warhol first edition retrospective art and photography books and illustrated catalogs, including a Warhol-signed copy of Interview Magazine. Rounding out the urban and graffiti art selections are two works by LA II (Angel Ortiz), including a painted terra cotta vase that is tagged all over. Already appreciating much interest, this vase has an eminently reasonable estimate of $1,000-$2,000.
