In addition to the sale, Cowan’s will be hosting a book signing, lecture and preview event with Ernest Lawrence, author of Alone with the Past: The Life and Photographic Art of Roland W. Reed, on Thursday, Sept. 19 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Eastern.
Cowan’s will offer the second portion of items from the Marvin L. Lince collection of American Indian Art. Lince began collecting American Indian art in the late 1980s. His keen eye for quality and rarity is what has made his collection an important one. Fifteen exceptional items from the Lince Collection sold for just over $670,000 in Cowan’s April 5 American Indian Art auction, and 17 more items from the collection will come to the auction block in this sale.
Highlights from the Lince Collection will include a Great Lakes pipe tomahawk with a brass and silver inlay estimated to bring anywhere between $50,000-$75,000, Crow Foot’s Blackfeet dag knife with the beaded hide sheath is expected to sell for $40,000-$60,000, a Red River metis quilled hide knife sheath with a dag knife is estimated at $45,000-$55,000, and a Western plains tomahawk with an antelope drop is estimated at $35,000-$45,000.
“The auction is filled with exceptional weaponry and beadwork, which I feel will carry excitement throughout the sale,” noted Danica Farnand, director, American Indian art. “We are looking forward to offering more items from the Lince Collection in addition to fine material from private collectors. A favorite piece of mine is the Navajo first phase concha belt (lot 188). It has seven beautifully stamped conchas with a simple rectangular buckle and original patina. As an added feature, we are excited to host a lecture and book signing with author Ernest Lawrence.”
Two fine examples of Joseph Henry Sharp’s (1859-1953) work will also be up for auction on Sept. 20. A painting titled Crow Encampment is estimated to bring between $80,000-$120,000. Around 1910, Sharp began to work exclusively in Taos, N.M. He is well known for his portraits of American Indians, but rarely painted Plains encampment scenes. Another Sharp, titled Pueblo Drummer, is expected to sell anywhere from $40,000-$60,000.
“We are thrilled to once again be offering a selection of important Western paintings by artists with Cincinnati roots. A pair of oils by Joseph Henry Sharp are expected to garner quite a bit of interest, as well as a tremendous group of Joseph Scheuerle portraits,” noted Graydon Sikes, director, paintings and prints.
Three works by the artist Joseph Scheuerle (1873-1948) will be included in the fine art portion of the sale. The three pieces are portraits, titled White Bull, Ogalala Sioux, Bulltail, Crow and Nan Poon Ya, Nespelem. They are all estimated to bring $8,000-$12,000.
Beaded items are expected to perform well in the sale. An Apache girl’s sunrise ceremony beaded hide tunic is estimated at $10,000-$15,000, a pair of Sioux beaded and quilled matched buffalo hide bags are estimated at $8,000-$10,000, a Sioux beaded hide bow case and quiver is expected to fetch $7,000-$9,000, and a Pottawatomie pictorial beaded bandolier bag is estimated to bring anywhere between $6,000-$8,000.
Textiles and weavings will also be featured in the auction. A Navajo Ganado weaving is expected to bring anywhere between $8,000-$10,000, a Helen Begay Navajo Teec Nos Pos weaving is estimated at $6,000-$8,000, a Navajo third phase chief blanket is expected to bring $5,000-$6,000, and a Navajo Yei weaving is estimated at $3,000-$5,000.
A portion of the sale will consist of American Indian pottery, baskets and carvings. A Western Apache figural olla is estimated at $10,000-$15,000, an Eastern Great Lakes effigy burl wood bowl is also estimated to bring $10,000-$15,000, and a Juan Quezada polychrome olla is expected to fetch $3,000-$4,000.
Other notable lots in the auction in the Sept. 20 sale include a Navajo classic woman’s dress estimated at $20,000-$30,000, a Navajo first phase concha belt estimated at $10,000-$15,000, and an Iroquois false face mask is expected to sell between $6,000-$8,000.
