OAKLAND, Calif. – Clars Auction Gallery will stage a Modern + Contemporary Art and Design sale on Friday, March 25. The 265-lot sale will feature prints, sculptures and original works by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Paul Wonner, Roy Lichtenstein, Wayne Thiebaud, Milton Avery, Robert Longo and Robert Motherwell. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

The highlight of the sale will be a painting by California artist Loie Hollowell (American, b. 1983-) titled Point of Entry (Blood-Orange Moon over Orange Sac). The work is a strong example of Hollowell’s signature colorful blend of abstraction and bodily form. The painting, estimated at $400,000-$600,000, measures four by three feet and pulls the observer in with its rhythmic arrangement and its compelling illusion of three-dimensionality.

The sale will also showcase a 1961 original graphite on paper by Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973). The drawing, titled Les Dejeuners – Femmes Accroupies (Crouching Women), was exhibited at Alex Maguy Galerie De L’Elysee in 1966 and has remained in a private collection ever since. The original work will be offered at $100,000-$150,000.

The design portion of the sale will include pieces by many legendary names, among them George Nakashima, Hans Wegner, Finn Juhl, Hans Olsen, Jens Risom, Charles and Ray Eames and Florence Knoll.

The highlight of the selection will be a George Nakashima overhanging walnut wall case executed in 1971 and estimated at $20,000-$30,000. Two pieces by Hans Wegner appear in the lineup as well: a Papa Bear lounge chair, estimated at $6,000-$9,000, and a teak, white oak and brass Valet chair that has an identical estimate.

Also of note is a Finn Juhl Japan sofa, dating to circa 1958 and estimated at $2,000-$4,000. Decorative arts offerings will be represented by a large collection of glass by artists and firms such as Dale Chihuly, Fontana Arte, Venini, Daum and Lalique.
