OAKLAND, Calif. – Clars Auction Gallery will host an important sale Nov. 17 and 18 that will feature impressive and rare works by both American and European artists. Also to be presented will be exceptional works in sterling, art glass and a number of special collections. Clars’ November 2018 Fine Art, Decorative Art, Furniture, Jewelry and Asian Art Auction will bring to the market investment level property from prominent California estates, museums, private institutions and special collections. Late 19th- and early 20th-century American paintings will be well represented at the Nov. 18 auction. Frederick Kensett (American, 1816-1872) is one of the most respected painters of the Hudson River School, a 19th-century American art movement by a group of landscape artists whose aesthetic vision was influenced by romanticism and the beauty of nature in the Northeastern United States. Between 1859 and 1872, Kensett produced over 30 paintings of the North Shore of Massachusetts, then a popular vacation spot for Bostonians. Clars will offer one of these rare paintings titled Beverly, Massachusetts (1863), for $60,000-$90,000 (above).

Having set the highest record price for a watercolor by the artist ($54,450 in February 2018), Clars will again be featuring another spectacular watercolor by Paul Sawyier (American, 1865-1917). Titled Kentucky River Scene, this work (below) will be offered with an estimate of $20,000-$40,000.

Rare works by European artists will also be presented at this sale. Headlining this category will be a beautiful black chalk drawing by the Austrian artist, Gustav Klimt (1862-1918). This work, having belonged to the late Jerome Snyder, American illustrator and graphic designer, who was best known for his position as Sports Illustrated’s first art director, depicts Klimt’s most famous patron, Adele Bloch Bauer. Klimt created two paintings of Bloch-Bauer in 1907 and 1912, both of which were commissioned by her husband Ferdinand Bloch. Several of his female figures are believed to have been modeled after Adele, including his most celebrated work, The Kiss. The drawing, which will be sold at Clars on Nov. 18, is one of Klimt’s studies of Adele for the 1907 painting, The Lady in Gold. This significant work will be offered for $50,000-$70,000.

In the European sculpture category, a bronze sculpture by Lynn Chadwick (British, 1914-2003) titled Maquette V Winged Figures (1968), will be offered for $30,000-$50,000. Chadwick was a prominent abstract sculptor who followed in the steps of Henry Moore in depicting monumental works of the Human Figure.

One of the most sought after mediums by collectors are the small (3-by-3 inch) kinetic, wood paintings from the early 1960s by Yaacov Agam (Israeli, b. 1928). Clars will offer one of these meticulously executed works titled Red Movement (1962), for $30,000-$50,000. \

Highlighting the prints and multiples category will be Andy Warhol’s Mao (1972), a screenprint of the Chinese Communist party leader. This work will be offered with an estimate of $30,000-50,000. [PHOTO 6]

Investment level sterling silver will be featured prominently at this sale. A top example is the impressive and important pair of American sterling silver candelabra that was designed by George Paulding Farnham for Tiffany & Co., 1902-1907. The candelabra will be offered with an estimate of $35,000-$55,000.

Exceptional works from Tiffany Studios, New York, will also be presented. A leaded glass table lamp in the Dogwood pattern will be offered for $25,000-$35,000. A second leaded glass table lamp carries an estimate of $10,000-15,000. There will also be a patinated bronze tobacco humidor, having a volcano crater top, estimated at $8,000-$12,000, and a Turtleback desk lamp, in the “Zodiac” pattern, carries an estimate of $6,000-$9,000.

An impressive assortment of art glass from renowned designers will be offered. Dale Chihuly’s (American, b. 1941) Persian cobalt and vermillion art glass sculpture, carries an estimate of $8,000-$12,000.
