SARASOTA, Fla. — Andrew Ford, owner and auctioneer of Sarasota Estate Auction, has secured important and powerful works of art for the auction house’s next sale, which takes place Saturday, July 23 and Sunday, July 24. Headlining this 1,300-lot auction will be works by 20th-century American artists Albert York, Romare Howard Bearden and John Chamberlain. In addition, more than 30 pieces of art glass from artists including Dale Chihuly, Stephen Powell and Martin Blank will be sold from the Ringling collection to benefit the scholarship program at the Ringling College of Art & Design in Sarasota. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
Albert York (American, 1928-2009), a favorite artist of Jackie Kennedy and Lauren Bacall, created a circa-1980 oil on panel Trees and Fence (originally titled Imaginary Playground). It has just been released from a private collection in New England and it is estimated at $80,000-$120,000. Its appearance at the July 23-24 Sarasota Estate Auction sale represents its auction debut. York was not a prolific painter, completing only about 200-250 pieces in his lifetime, so when one of his pieces comes to the open market, it generates a great deal of interest.
Romare Bearden (1911-1988), the Modernist African American figure and landscape collagist, completed The Quilters (shown at top of page) as a mixed media watercolor image of two African Americans working on a quilt. Purchased directly from the artist in 1981, the work offered in this sale carries an estimate of $100,000-$150,000 and includes documentation.
John Chamberlain (American, 1927-2011) was known for his crushed automobile sculptures and collages, with his creations displayed in many important institutions worldwide. The July 23-24 auction includes an untitled work of his dating to 1984, which he fashioned from salvaged car parts and mounted on paper. Its estimate is $25,000-$30,000.
Paul Evans (1931-1987) was an American-born furniture designer, sculptor and artist, who was famous for his contributions to American furniture design and the American Craft movement of the 1970s. Two Paul Evans chairs are in the auction lineup. One is a patchwork swivel chair, and the other is a sculpted bronze Brutalist chair that is signed and dated 1969, and estimated at $15,000-$20,000.
Dale Chihuly (American, b. 1941-) is known for pushing the strictures of studio art glass past all imaginable limits. A free-form art glass bowl dated 1995 and signed by Chihuly will be on offer in day one of the sale. Proceeds from it and other art glass lots will fund scholarships at the Ringling College of Art & Design in Sarasota.
