SARASOTA, Fla. – Andrew Ford of Sarasota Estate Auction announced that their Sept. 13 sale will include seven works by acclaimed artists Syd Solomon, Willem de Kooning and a 17th century masterpiece from Anthony Van Dyke. Bid absentee or live online through LiveAuctioneers.
“This sale will bring to market some exceptional works with the Van Dyke sure to attract worldwide attention as well as the de Kooning. In addition, there are four oils by Syd Solomon a Sarasota resident artist for more than half of his life. Frankly, we are thrilled to have such a wonderful assortment of artists represented in this sale,” Ford said.
Syd Solomon (1917- 2004) was an active 20th century painter, born in Pennsylvania, but relocated to Sarasota after his service in World War II. From there his career as an abstract artist flourished. About 1955 he and his wife found a second home in East Hampton, N.Y., where they began their dual living style, sharing their time between the two homes. His peak was in the late ’50s and ’60s. Some of his work is currently on exhibit at the Ringling Museum of Art, titled “Syd Solomon: Concealed and Revealed” offering a unique selection of his paintings along with objects from the Solomon Archive.
De Kooning was also an East Hampton, N.Y., resident for the latter half of the 20th century. Born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, he came to New York as a stowaway in 1926 where he worked for the next quarter-century until buying a house in East Hampton about 1952. This became his home and studio for the rest of his life where he perfected his style, known as Abstract Expressionism. His work is treasured worldwide with recent sales exceeding $100 million. For this sale his work, an oil painting on a page of the New York Times dated Aug. 24, 1974, will be offered along with two others of his signed studies.
The painting of George Gordon, 2nd Marquess of Huntley [1599-1649], attributed to Anthony Van Dyke, is a life-size portrait of the subject; another example of a piece that rarely comes to market. Born in 1599, Van Dyke studied under Peter Paul Rubens and was appointed principal painter in the Ordinary to King Charles I of England about 1632, continuing to serve in that post until his death in 1641.
Additionally, an Ottmar Elliger The Younger (1633-1679) oil on canvas titled The Banquet of Cleopatra, a Baccarat Chandelier and actress Shirley Booth’s art collection from her Cape Cod home will be up for sale.
Complementing this sale will be an outstanding collection of 19th century porcelain bespoke coat of arms/crests of the aristocracy, an exceptional collection of Gucci handbags, shoes and wardrobe accessories and about 200 lots of specialty silver and gold pieces. Fine jewelry will include a Tiffany brooch and a more than 200-piece selection of gold and diamond jewelry and silver miniatures.
