NEW YORK – Works by Viktor Makarov, Alexander Kudriavchenko and Orest Manetsky – all artists hailing from Ukraine – will appear in a Jasper52 sale of European Fine Arts scheduled for Saturday, April 2, starting at 7 pm Eastern time. Other artists whose works will be offered in the 64-lot auction of paintings, drawings, sculptures and photographs include Mikhail Kokin, Elena Pronkina, Mihail Shemyakin, Barbudaz Sh, Natasha Steshenko, Gennady Lesnichiy, Nikolay Chaliy, Vladimir Mukiy, Pavlo Bedzir, Maria Levitska, Andrey Chebotaru, Pavlo Makov, Dmitriy Shevchuk, Igor Taverovsky, Mykola Nechvoglod, Oleg Demko, Mikhail Kublik, Alexander Turanskiy, Andrii Kotliarchuk, Peter Kishenyuk, Pavlo Romanov, Peter Boyko, Tatiana Binovskaya, Oksana Stratiychuk, Irina Kurilko, Anton Basanets, Nikolay Peremyshlev and Igor Kapakaev. Part of the profits from this auction will support humanitarian aid to Ukrainians. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
The late Viktor Makarov is well-represented in the April 2 auction, but a particular standout is Autumn Walk, a 1980 oil on canvas estimated at $1,500-$2,000. His career spanned 55 years, and his work earned him the nickname “the Van Gogh of our time.” Known for his Modernism, Makarov was a member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine and the International Professional Union of Artists, and in the year 2000, the artist was awarded the title of National Master of Painting. Autumn Walk features a warm palette with bold brush strokes and an engaging composition, with two figures placed at the extreme left.
An equally alluring work by a contemporary Ukrainian artist is Alexander Kudriavchenko’s Breakfast in the Grass, completed in 2020. The highly vertical oil and acrylic on canvas depicts a lush landscape strongly colored in orange and yellow with green seeping in at the edges. Breakfast in the Grass appeared in an exhibition at the Kiev gallery Portal11 in July 2021. It carries an estimate of $2,500-$3,000.
The final highlight is by the contemporary Lviv-born artist Orest Manetsky. He painted the oil on canvas Event in a Vacuum in 2020 and described it like so: “He felt everything and everything distracted him from his own being. No matter where he went or how deep he went, he always found something. Everywhere there is something going on. Something always begins to appear in the void over time. Or does it just seem to?” Event in a Vacuum is estimated at $3,000-$3,500. A total of five percent of the purchase price of this work, the Kudriavchenko and also the Makarov will fund organizations that provide humanitarian relief to the Ukrainian people.
