Underdog, Winnie the Pooh and more share stage at May 10 sale of animation cels

NEW YORK – On Wednesday, May 10, starting at 1 pm Eastern time, Jasper52 will present a sale titled Animation Cels 1930s-1990s & Illustration Art. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Consisting of 97 lots, the May 10 sale boasts several strong offerings of Disney material, led by an elaborate Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs piece on a Courvoisier background that combines two cels to show the Evil Hag at the left and the scheming Queen on the right; a cel from a 1936 short, on a custom hand-painted background, showing the Big Bad Wolf and three underlings; an original 1973 Robin Hood production cel showing the title character, with a Disney seal and a Disney certificate of authenticity; an original photostat model sheet for the Timothy Mouse character in the 1941 film Dumbo; a pencil production drawing from 1963’s The Sword in the Stone; a limited edition Courvoisier cel showing Jose Carioca from the 1944 Disney release The Three Caballeros; and a sequence of four drawings depicting a ballet-dancing hippo from the Dance of the Hours sequence in the 1940 classic Fantasia.

Other standouts  include an original 1914 pen and ink on rice paper animation drawing of Gertie the Dinosaur by Winsor McCay; a 1996 limited edition Marvin the Martian hand-painted cel, adapted from an original character model sheet and created with the same methods Warner Bros. animators employed when preparing cels for actual production; and several pieces by illustrator John Kurtz, including an original hand-painted cel made for the View-Master 3D Fraggle Rock reel, a hand-painted Tom and Jerry cel by Kurtz that became the cover art for a Golden Books release, and a 1994 watercolor of Elmo mulling a shop window selection of lunch boxes, done for Sesame Street Magazine.

First among the highlights is an original production cel from the 1990s Nickelodeon hit Ren & Stimpy, depicting Ren the dog tapping Stimpy the cat’s head with a ladle. It comes with a studio seal and a certificate of authenticity and is estimated at $200-$250.

The aforementioned John Kurtz landed among the sale highlights with his multi-color pencil drawing for the 2005 Winnie the Pooh book Best Day Ever. It shows a contented Winnie the Pooh napping with a grin on his face as little Roo is about to tease him awake with the leafy end of a twig. The lot notes state it is in excellent condition, and it is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the Cricket Gallery. Its estimate is $450-$550.

Completing the highlights is a limited edition sericel titled Away We Go. It pictures the superhero Underdog in flight, holding the hand of Sweet Polly Purebred, who wears a green dress and matching high heels, one of which has just slipped from her left foot. It is signed by Joe Harris, creator of Underdog, comes with a certificate of authenticity from the Cricket Gallery, and has an estimate of $120-$150.
