OAKLAND, Calif. – On September 16, 17, and 19, Clars Auction Gallery will hold a trio of dedicated sales. Fine Jewelry & Timepieces takes place September 16; Modern + Contemporary Art + Design is scheduled for September 17; and a Fine Art, Furniture, Asian Art auction will take place September 19. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Clars will present the firm’s Modern + Contemporary Art + Design auction on September 17, which will be led by Andy Warhol’s iconic Moonwalk screenprints. Printed in 1987, the suite depicts Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin’s famous walk on the moon during the Apollo 11 mission of 1969. Highlighted in yellow and pink, the prints capture Warhol’s classic pop art visuals while simultaneously demonstrating a shift away from commercial imagery to historical events and figures. The works were intended to be a part of a series depicting famous and influential television events but due to the artist’s death just months after their printing, Moonwalk was the only image completed. With an estimate at $100,000-$200,000, Clars expects these prints to be a major highlight of the sale.

Not often do extraordinary works by San Francisco Bay area artist Paul Wonner come up for sale. In this auction, Clars will offer two: Flowers and Boxes of Fruit (1991) and Breakfast Table and Roman Head (1998-99) These large still life paintings were executed during his most desirable and sought-after time period and will be offered at $80,000-$120,000 and $70,000-$100,000, respectively.

After shattering the world auction record for the highest recorded price for the artist in September 2020, Clars is pleased to offer the vibrant Nude – Untitled (1976-78) by Raimonds Staprans. This will be the first time a painting of this subject matter by Staprans will be offered at auction. It is estimated at $80,000-$120,000.

Offered in the print portion of the sale will be Dawn and Dusk, completed in 1899 by noted Art Nouveau artist Alphonse Mucha. The lithographs are large horizontal format prints, rarely ever created by the artist, and depict two reclining beauties, symbolized the rising and setting sun. The suite will be offered at $15,000-$20,000.

The Design selection will feature a number of furnishings by world-renowned designers, including an Edward Wormley Gondola sofa estimated at $15,000-$20,000 and an Edward Wormley pair of Janus armchairs valued at $4,000-$6,000. Also in the lineup is a large George Nelson CSS (Comprehensive Storage unit) with six uprights, estimated at $8,000-$10,000, and a Philip and Kelvin LaVerne Eternal Forest table that carries an estimate of $8,000-$12,000.

The Design team is excited to present a ‘Tlingit’ Hat by Preston Singletary, a Native American glass artist. He has worked with Seattle area artists such as Benjamin Moore and Dante Marioni, and also spent time at Kosta Boda, where he studied Scandinavian design. Singletary took these European and American glass blowing traditions and fused them with Northwest Native art traditions to create blown glass forms with Tlingit designs. The Tlingit Hat in the September 17 auction features a frog pattern and carries an estimate of $7,000-$10,000. The hat is from the Estate of John Cologhi, fundraiser for the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian.

Other American Designers in the sale include Verner Panton, Adrian Pearsall, Harrison McIntosh, David Cressey, Otto and Vivika Heino, Rudy Autio, Marguerite Wildenhain, Joseph Bulone, Erwine and Estelle Laverne, Walter Lamb, Peter Pepper Products, Charles and Ray Eames, and Evelyn Ackerman.

The vehicle department will be represented by a 1961 Chevrolet Corvette Resto-Mod, estimated at $92,000-$95,000, and a 1963 Volkswagen Beetle, Model 113, estimated at $15,000-$20,000.

FINE JEWLERY & TIMEPIECES, SEPTEMBER 16

The Fine Jewelry and Timepiece department at Clars Auction Gallery will be offering a fine selection of antique jewelry, signed, diamonds and colored gemstone jewelry and timepieces.

The sale is highlighted by a selection of antique and retro pieces, including a diamond and gemstone brooch by Faberge workmaster Oskar Woldemar Pihl, estimated at $12,000-$15,000; a diamond and 18K gold convertible bracelet from Cartier, estimated at $14,000-$18,000; and a pair of sapphire and 18K gold fur clips by Van Cleef & Arpels, estimated at $8,500-$10,500.

A pair of bicolor 18K Bulgari gold earrings carry an estimate of $3,000-$5,000. An 18K gold bracelet from the Onda Serpentine collection of Marina B, an Italian Jewelry House established by Marina Bulgari, is estimated at $6,000-$8,000. Lastly, a Tiffany & Co. 1.60-carat D VS2 diamond and platinum ring is estimated at $18,000-$22,000.

FINE ART, FURNITURE, ASIAN ART, SEPTEMBER 19

The Asian Art department will be offering a selection of watercolors by Pan Tseng-Ying,  including Resurrection, a gouache and watercolor on paper estimated at $2,000-$4,000. The watercolors were acquired directly from the artist around 1963 in New York City, where the private collector befriended the artist and remained lifelong friends. These paintings have never been offered at auction until now, and have never been reproduced.

Additional highlights include a Chinese celadon glazed jar, estimated at $5,000-$7,000; a Chinese lavender ground embroidery panel valued at $3,000-$5,000; and a Chinese Mughal-style spinach jade censer by Xia Changxin, estimated at $3,000-$5,000.
